Year Two
Dear Year Two Community,
We’re excited to share what our Year 2 students have been learning this term! Here’s an update on the wonderful progress they’ve been making in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, and Inquiry.
Reading
In Reading we have been exploring the world of Non-Fiction texts. Students have investigated the common features of non-fiction texts and used these features to prove whether a chosen text is fiction or non-fiction. Students also worked to strengthen their comprehension skills by focusing on building text to world connections, understanding the importance of clarifying technical vocabulary and searching for information within a text to help them answer the wonderings they have about a topic.
Writing
In Writing students have been exploring the elements of story writing, particularly focusing on elements that engage a reader's attention. Students have analysed character traits, established a sense of place and time, and began exploring the concept of sizzling starts to understand how literary devices such as onomatopoeia, foreshadowing and character analysis can capture a readers attention.
Mathematics
In Mathematics students have been exploring the concepts of Fractions and Data. When exploring fractions, students established the understanding that fractions are equal parts of a whole and explored the different types of fractions they can create. When working with data they established the understandings that data is information, why people collect data and different ways data can be presented.
Inquiry
In Inquiry students have began exploring our new central idea 'The world works together to support communities responding to disasters'. Students have established the understanding of a disaster, began exploring the different types of manmade and natural disasters people might experience around the world, and expressed their wonderings.
Christmas Carols
Students have begun practising their Christmas Carol for our 2025 Christmas Carol Concert. By now all students should know the name of their Christmas Carol and received a lyric sheet to help them practise at home. If your child has not received their sheet yet, or it has been misplaced, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher and they will happily provide you with a new one. Please remember to check your emails, Xuno and Schoolbox regularly for any helpful practising tips and concert information from your classroom teacher.
