Year One

2024

Dear Year One Community,

We’re excited to share what our Year 1 students have been learning this term! Here’s an update on the wonderful progress they’ve been making in Reading, Writing, Maths, and Inquiry.

Reading:

In Reading, our focus has been on building comprehension skills, by answering questions about what we have read. This approach helps students develop a deeper understanding of the text so they can find and answer questions appropriately.

Writing:

In Writing, we have been working on narratives, with a special focus on developing characters by using inferencing and character traits. Students have been creating descriptions of characters they’ll use in future stories, carefully thinking about the unique traits, appearances, and personalities that will bring their characters to life. They are learning to create character traits and backgrounds that make their stories engaging and believable. We can’t wait to see how these creative ideas evolve!

Maths:

In Maths, students have been learning about fractions of collections. They have been practising dividing groups of objects into equal parts, helping them understand the concept of halves, quarters, thirds, and eights in a tangible way. Using hands-on activities, they’re gaining confidence in identifying and working with fractions, which is a big achievement at this stage!

Inquiry:

Our current Unit of Inquiry, ‘How the World Works’, has sparked curiosity as students explore the Sun, Moon, and Earth. They have been brainstorming and discussing how the movements of the Sun and Moon impact our planet, such as how day and night occur. These discussions encourage students to think like scientists, asking questions and sharing ideas about the fascinating changes we see in the sky and how they affect life on Earth.
