Respectful Relationships

with Gretel Van Wyngaarden

Respectful Relationships is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum and promotes respect and equality across the school community. The Respectful Relationships curriculum covers eight topics of Social and Emotional Learning across all levels. This term at Brookside, we are teaching topics 7 and 8 across all year levels.

We are passionate about the implementation of the Respectful Relationships curriculum at our school. By embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, and other school events, we can have a positive impact on our students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviours and the important relationships between each other and our staff. Below we’ve outlined more information about the two we are focusing on this term.

Topic 7

Learning activities within this topic assist students to help challenge stereotypes and critique the influence of gender norms on attitudes and behaviour. They learn about key issues relating to human rights and gender identity, and focus on the importance of respect within relationships. The activities promote respect for diversity.

Topic 8

Learning activities within this topic focus on building an understanding of the effects of gender based violence and focus on the standards associated with respectful relationships. Students develop the skills needed to solve problems, set boundaries within relationships, and play an active role within the prevention of gender based violence. They develop peer support and help-seeking skills that can be applied in response to situations involving gender- based violence in family, peer, community or on-line relationships.
