From The Team

It has been a wonderful start to the year in the Senior School, and we are so proud of how smoothly our students have settled back into learning. Over the past few weeks, we have focused on getting to know one another, building positive classroom routines, and strengthening our learning community. A key part of this has been our work around respect—how we show it to ourselves, to others, and to our learning spaces.

It is fantastic to see our Year 3–6 students working so well together, supporting one another, and building new friendships across the senior years. Students have also begun exploring leadership opportunities, with the selection of our Sustainables, SRC, and DigiTech teams. We are already seeing students step up with enthusiasm and responsibility.

To celebrate a successful first two weeks, we enjoyed our 'Slide into Senior School' event, where students participated in a range of fun activities designed to build connections and celebrate our strong start to the year. The excitement and teamwork on display were a great reflection of the positive culture we are creating together.

Our teaching team is incredibly excited to learn and grow alongside this new cohort in 2026. We are looking forward to a year filled with curiosity, collaboration, and continued growth for all of our learners.

What We Are Learning in Specialist Classes              in Term 1

- CULTURAL STUDIES -

Years 3-6

This term, students in Years 3-6 will build foundational French communication skills by learning high-frequency words and phrases they can use straight away, including greetings, polite expressions, self-introductions and short dialogues in relatable contexts such as the classroom and a café. Lessons will develop listening, pronunciation, and reading/writing of conversational phrases through structured practice and interactive role-plays. Students will also explore aspects of French culture and daily life such as landmarks, traditions, food and cultural symbols, and make comparisons with Australian life to understand how language and culture are connected.

- PERFORMING ARTS -

Year 3/4

Students will learn how to tune the ukulele, name the strings, and form chord shapes. They will develop an understanding of simple chord progressions using two, three and four chords, and work towards changing smoothly between chord shapes. Using these skills, students will perform popular songs and learn the Scoresby Superstar school song.

Year 5/6

In Performing Arts this term, students will rehearse in an ensemble setting using classroom instruments, and learn the bass and melody parts for Stand By Me. They will develop aural skills by identifying musical intervals. Students will also learn and revise the following ukulele chords: C, F, Am, G, Em and D7, and work towards changing between chords fluently to perform more complex songs.

- PHYSICAL EDUCATION -

Year 3/4

Students have PE lessons on Wednesdays (or occasionally Tuesdays if hot/rainy weather is forecast). Please wear sport-appropriate footwear on these days.

This term our focus is fitness, sportsmanship, active participation, and fair play. Students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills through the sports of Netball, Soccer and T-Ball.

Students in Year 4, who can swim 50 metres in 60 seconds, have the opportunity to swim in the District Swimming competition. There will also be an intensive 2-week swimming program later this term.

- SCIENCE -

Years 3 – 6

This term in Science, students will focus on Biological Science. We will explore the differences and similarities between living, non-living and once living things. We will investigate food chains and the role of producers, consumers and decomposers within them. We will learn about food webs and how changes in habitat can impact these.

- VISUAL ARTS -

Year 3/4

This term, students will explore colour and drawing. They will experiment with crayon transfer prints to create a self-portrait and will view, discuss and create an abstract portrait inspired by the work of Sandra Silberzweig. Students will also explore the art element of value using charcoal to draw a penguin.

We will be using charcoal, oil pastels and paint this term, so please ensure your child has an art smock to protect their school uniform. Smocks can be bought or made from an old, oversized top. The smocks must be clearly named and will be kept in a classroom tub for the children to wear when using messy art materials.

Sliding Into Senior School

On Monday 9th of January, the Senior School had a celebration day where we did fun activities in three different groups for the whole entire day! It was to celebrate the end of the learning community, and we played lots of competitive games like no-hands cup stacking, Battleships, Kahoot and outdoor games. We even watched a movie called The Secret Life of Pets. While we were watching the movie, Julie, Sam and Miss Harper served us ice cream and our special lollies. Outside, we played Capture the Flag and Hot Potato. It was certainly a great day!

Leadership Breakfast

We had to arrive at 8:15am for the Leadership Breakfast and then went into the Senior School collaborative space. The people that attended this breakfast were the Specialist Captains, School Captains, Vice Captains and House Captains. There were croissants, fruit and juice. While we ate we could talk to our friends, then Mrs Rheumer, Miss Harper and Mrs Hartley spoke to us about our responsibilities and roles.  Thanks to Miss Harper, Mrs Rheumer and Mrs Hartley for setting this up.

Buddies

On Friday the 7th of February, the Year 6s had their first session of Buddies! They had the privilege of eating the most delicious picnic lunch! After that, the Year 6s got to take some photos with their Foundation buddies which were later on display outside of the Foundation building. There was also a picture with all of the Foundation buddies and Year 6s, just like a group photo!  Everyone went into the playground to do some poses and were pretty satisfied with the results too. Finally, after the group photos, the Year 6s got to play with their buddies in the adventure playground until the end of lunch. The Year 6s have had fun with their buddies, playing with them and helping them have a wonderful time at Scoresby Primary School.
