Library News
A big welcome to all our students and families as we begin an exciting new year in the library. Whether you are returning or joining us for the first time, we are thrilled to have you as part of our library community. The start of 2026 brings new opportunities to grow as readers and we look forward to partnering with you on your child’s reading journey.
We especially welcome our Kindergarten students who will soon visit our wonderful library for the first time.
Why Reading Matters
The impact of reading reaches far beyond learning to decode words on a page. Reading shapes how we think and understand the world around us. Children who read regularly develop rich language skills, imagination and curiosity. They learn how sentences work and how to express themselves clearly. Even if your child has not yet learnt to read, shared family reading strengthens family bonds and creates opportunities for children to connect with others.
St Patrick’s Library
St Patrick’s library has an extensive collection of picture books and Junior and Senior novels. Our Non Fiction collection is popular with students who enjoy exploring their world through information texts. Students also have access to thousands of digital resources through a shared Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN). ACEN utilises an app called SORA that allows students to read ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and comics on a phone, tablet, laptop or computer.
Your child’s teacher will communicate with you regarding library days for 2026. Please ensure your child has their library bag each week and returns books on time. As reading is central to all curriculum areas it is important for your child to borrow regularly so as to develop as an independent learner.
More details will be shared regarding access to SORA and digital resources.
2026 Library Events
Our students look forward to some very exciting events each year which promote a love of reading. These include our annual Book Fair, the CBCA Book Week and our much anticipated Book Week Parade. This year's theme is ‘Symphony of Stories’.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
St Patrick’s will be participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) again in 2026!
The aim of the PRC is:
- To encourage a love of reading for pleasure
- To enable children to experience quality literature
St Patrick’s had over 320 students complete the Challenge in 2025. Students eventually work towards receiving a medal from the NSW Premier in Year 9. What an achievement!
Students and families will receive more information in the coming weeks regarding PRC.
How lucky we are to have a dynamic and busy library at St Patrick’s. We look forward to a wonderful year of reading with you!
