Year 9 Maths CATs

The Year 9 Maths students spent Term 4 applying their mathematical knowledge to hands-on projects.
In the mainstream Year 9 classes all students participated in the Maths Monster CAT. In this unit, students recapped the fundamentals of length, area and volume and applied their knowledge to calculating the surface area and volume of complex composite shapes.
Students demonstrated their understanding by creating their own ‘maths monster’ from cardboard boxes and presenting calculations for surface area and volume. They were encouraged to express their creativity in their design while developing the mathematical understanding required to bring them to life.
Awards were given to the most creative and well executed monsters:
1st Place - Inara Lau (Slinky)
2nd Place - Marian Clavijo-Mayorga (WALL-E)
3rd Place - Ryder Peters-Carlucci (Frankenstein's Monster)
In the Year 9 Concept class, students completed the Graphing Assignment where they explored different types of functions that are a focus in the advanced maths streams in years 10 to 12.
The 9C students used their knowledge of differently shaped functions to create images on the graphing program Desmos. Some students used more than 30 unique equations for their designs, investigating how changing values affect the shape of these graphs. They transformed the functions through dilations, reflections and translations to produce their own creative designs.
