Art with Nicole & Emily

Raffi The Sea Turtle

Last year our 4/5 class learnt some traditional weaving techniques and participated in yarning circles as part of our unit on Indigenous Art. Students learnt about a range of storytelling traditions and the process and purpose of basket making. The class used raffia and needles and lots of resilience to weave small individual circles, then pieced them together to form a turtle shell. Taking inspiration from 'ghost net art' which utilises plastic rubbish from the oceans to form beautiful pieces of art, the students have designed and made a sea turtle. This beautiful collaborative artwork is on display in the office foyer.  Her name is Raffi and she is there, swimming through the ocean, to greet you when you visit the office. She is a very good listener if you have any stories to tell her and doesn't mind a gentle shell rub.

Perhaps she will be added to in the future with a few more circles... bubbles? ripples? friends? Emily hopes to inspire other basket weavers and host a staff weaving circle to encourage this wonderful mindful practice.

Also in art this year, Emily will be collecting plastic lids for creating more collaborative art. Last year Emily let our school community know our much loved colourful tree school mural is in a state of disrepair and we will be creating a new mural with our students.

Families are encouraged to collect as many different types, shapes and colours of clean plastic lids and drop them into our boxes located around the school.
