Levels 5 & 6

Week 3

And just like that… we’re off! Classrooms are now in full swing, with a strong focus on building positive learning communities where students feel safe, connected and ready to take on new challenges. Over the coming weeks, some initial assessments will begin alongside the introduction of regular curriculum routines and expectations.

Literacy

Reading

Students are reading and viewing texts connected to community, growth mindset and goal setting. We are practising key comprehension skills such as note taking and learning how to give thoughtful feedback about what we read.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to read each night and talk about the text together. Ask questions such as, “What did you learn?” or “What message was the author trying to share?” Conversations help strengthen understanding and confidence.

Writing

Students are writing letters to community members while also establishing strong bookwork habits. Short writing challenges are helping us set expectations for drafting, sharing, editing and improving our work. We are also focusing on self-assessment and presentation.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to write for real purposes at home. This might include letters, lists, notes or journal entries. Praising effort, neat presentation and careful editing reinforces classroom expectations.

Numeracy

Maths: Level 5 and 6

Our numeracy focus is data representation. Students will collect, organise and display information using a variety of graphs and charts, while learning how to interpret what the data tells us.

What you can do at home:

Talk about data in everyday life. This might include checking the weather chart, comparing scores in sport, or tracking simple information such as how many cars pass your street in five minutes. Ask your child to explain what the data shows and what conclusions they can draw. Encouraging them to describe their thinking helps strengthen their understanding.

CBL

Big Idea: Community

Our Term One CBL focus is Community. A strong sense of belonging helps students feel secure and ready to learn.

This week we are exploring the guiding question:“What qualities make someone a positive community member?”

Students will investigate this through the Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Wellbeing

Cyber Safety

As part of Safer Internet Day, the 5/6 team will be completing a cyber safety lesson from the eSafety Commissioner focused on online boundaries and consent. Students will explore how to communicate respectfully online, understand personal boundaries in digital spaces, and recognise that consent matters just as much online as it does in person. The lesson supports students to make safe, responsible choices and gives them language and strategies to respond if they feel uncomfortable or unsure in online situations.
