Science

We are looking forward to an exciting year of science in 2026. The new Victorian Curriculum for Science 2.0 is out, and I will be renewing our units of study to reflect the changes presented. Students started off the Term 1 reflecting on the nature of science and what to expect this coming year.
We engage in science by:
- asking questions
- making observations
- testing ideas
- collecting and analysing data
- using evidence to explain patterns
- revising explanations when new evidence becomes available
Students also took the time to refamiliarize themselves with the science room, how to stay safe in science and how to demonstrate the school values in each and every lesson.
Next week we dive into Earth and Space sciences!
Prep students will be exploring the changes in seasons, observing the weather throughout the year, and discussing how these changes affect their daily lives.
Level 1 students will learn about the relationship between the Sun, Earth and Moon, as well as Earth's place in our solar system.
Level 2 students will explore ways to look after the Earth's land, seas, and skies. They will use their knowledge of reducing, reusing and recycling to deeply understand the impact they can make on their environment and discover what actions they can take to care for their future here on Earth.
Level 3/4 students will be observing the features, similarities, differences and importance of rocks, minerals and soils. They will learn about how they can be used in a variety of ways as Earth resources.
Level 5/6 students will be closely studying Earth and comparing it to another planet within our solar system. Using guided inquiry, they will be considering both planets' yearly orbit around the Sun, their day and night length, the degree of tilt both planets have on their axis, their rotation direction, and any key physical details they can observe on their chosen planet.
Garden Club
Garden club started up again this week on Mondays during last play. I have come in a few times over the summer to water and weed the veggie patches. Garden Club members observed the tomato plants growing well, with some tomatoes forming on the vines. We found a few cheeky snails hiding along the edges and safely relocated them. Our sunflowers are growing well; some even have buds ready to open. We look forward to seeing more change in the following weeks as summer begins to come to a close.
...And remember mighty scientists; look closely, ask freely, and seek answers to Earth's cool and crazy wonders.
