Dear Families,

Welcome to 2026! What a start it has been. While we’ve had a few unexpected changes, many wonderful things remain the same.

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Salem (Sam) Younes, and I have been at Rolling Hills Primary School since 2023. My primary role has been working on whole school curriculum and data, with some teaching sprinkled in to keep me energised.

This year, I am also taking on the Disability Inclusion role, as well as stepping into Ms Murcott’s Assistant Principal position while she is away. I look forward to seeing you around the school and supporting our students, staff, and families.

It has been fantastic to see, hear, and feel the calm start we’ve had to the school year. This is a testament to the strong relationships between home and school, and between teachers and their students.

As parents, we all tend to ask our children the same question at the end of each day: “How was your day?” As my own children have moved into Grades 5 and 6, their answers have become increasingly monosyllabic. With that in mind, I did a little digging online and found some alternative questions. I now ask my kids the final one every night before they go to bed.

Here are some ideas you might like to try:

  • What made you smile today?
  • Did anyone do anything silly to make you laugh?
  • What was the most popular game at recess?
  • How did you help someone today?
  • What did you do that was creative?
  • Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday.
  • What was your favourite thing that happened today?
  • What was an example of kindness you saw today?
  • Did you say “thank you” to anyone?
  • How were you brave today?
  • What is one thing you are proud of today?
  • What is the last thing that went well today?

I hope these help spark some meaningful conversations at home.

Warm regards,

Sam Younes.
