Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

Gallery Image

This year, our school is continuing with Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) to support all students in learning and practising positive behaviours. PBL focuses on teaching, modelling, practising and celebrating expected behaviours linking to our GREAT Expectations.  Across the school, students will be acknowledged for making good choices, and supported when they need extra guidance. You can help at home by discussing these expectations with your child and celebrating their efforts to demonstrate positive behaviour.

PBL Lessons

Week 1 - Routines

Week 2 - Routines

Week 3 - GREAT Expectations and Emergency Drills

Week 4 - Using the High 5

Routines and Expectations

In the first two weeks of school, our PBL lessons focused on learning routines and expectations. Students practiced daily routines such as lining up, moving safely around the classroom, and using equipment responsibly. By learning and following these routines, students are building the foundation for positive behaviour and a safe, respectful, and productive learning environment.

GREAT Expectations

In Week 3, students will review the GREAT expectations at GSPS. They will learn what these expectations look like and sound like across different areas of the school, including classrooms, playgrounds, and shared spaces. By exploring real examples and practising the behaviours, students are supported to make positive choices

G - Give your Best

R - Respect

E- Enjoy

A- Act Safely

T- Teamwork

Using the High 5

In week 4, students will learn to use the High 5 to solve problems in the classroom and in the playground/ The steps are:

 Step 1 – Ask kindly

Step 2 – Ask firmly

Step 3 – Ignore

Step 4 – Walk away

Step 5 – Report if the problem continues.

Students are also taught that in some situations, they should skip the earlier steps and report to a teacher immediately, such as when they feel unsafe. By practising these steps, students are learning to manage conflicts safely, respectfully, and confidently.

Starting the Year Well: Wellbeing & Behaviour at Our School

Welcome to the start of a new school year. At our school, student wellbeing is a priority because we know that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected. As we begin the year, our focus is on building strong relationships, establishing clear expectations, and supporting every student to engage positively in their learning. We are committed to working closely with families to ensure a strong start and to continue this positive momentum throughout the year.

Our Approach to Wellbeing

Student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. When students feel safe and supported, they are better able to engage, learn, and build positive relationships. This year we will continue to:

  • Build strong relationships between students and staff
  • Explicitly teach social and emotional skills
  • Support students to recognise and regulate emotions
  • Encourage help-seeking and open communication

Our staff work closely together to ensure students receive the right support at the right time.

Positive Behaviour for Learning

We continue to follow our Positive Behaviour for Learning framework, which clearly teaches and reinforces expected behaviours across all school settings. Students are regularly reminded of:

  • How to be respectful, safe, and responsible
  • What positive behaviour looks like in classrooms, playgrounds, and shared spaces
  • How their choices impact others

Positive behaviour is acknowledged and celebrated, while inappropriate behaviour is addressed in a consistent and supportive way.

Supporting Students Who Need Extra Help

Some students may need additional support with behaviour, emotions, or transitions. Supports may include:

  • Check-ins with trusted adults
  • Small group or individual wellbeing programs
  • Collaboration with families and external services
  • Individual behaviour or wellbeing plans where needed

We value strong partnerships with families and encourage open communication.

How Families Can Help

Families play a vital role in supporting wellbeing and behaviour. You can help by:

  • Encouraging regular attendance and punctuality
  • Talking positively about school
  • Reinforcing school expectations at home
  • Letting us know early if your child is experiencing difficulties

Moving Forward Together

By working together, we can ensure our school remains a place where students feel safe, valued, and ready to learn. We look forward to a positive and successful year ahead and thank you for your ongoing support.

If you have any questions or concerns about wellbeing or behaviour, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.

Student Council

Our Student Councils will meet throughout the year with our first meeting being this Wednesday.   Student Council provides students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills, have a voice in school decisions, and work collaboratively to plan initiatives that support school spirit, wellbeing, and community engagement. Representatives share ideas from their peers and help make our school a positive and inclusive place for everyone.

Chappy Sonia is at our school every Monday and Tuesday and continues to provide support to students through a range of positive wellbeing activities.

The Fruit Program is ongoing, with students able to access fresh fruit at morning tea or lunch via the Chappy Trolley.

Chappy will also be running a variety of activities throughout the week, including Chilling with Chappy, GREAT Games outside the library, and we are pleased to share that the Wellbeing Wagon is back for students to enjoy.

These activities provide valuable opportunities for students to connect, build relationships, and support their social and emotional wellbeing.

Wednesdays 9am to 10:30am. Follow the Red Flags at the Prep Precinct. Bring your GREAT Mates hat, morning tea and a water bottle (and a parent)!!

Playgroup supports children and families to build relationships, skills and confidence through play. All welcome.

We had a wonderful roll up for our very first session of 2026! So many new faces joined us! We were discovering all about 'My Family and Me'. Painting our families, finding homes for the animals, discovering if we liked splashing in water...

Mrs Norman and Mrs Clark are looking forward to 'sharing the love for Valentine's Day' this week and learning all about 'Lunar New Year' the following week.

We hope to see more of our 'little mates' soon.
