Year 5/6 Team News
with Christina, Edan, Molly, Melati, Bianca R & Matt
Welcome back to Willy Primary for 2026. We are very pleased to say that all our 5/6 students have made a wonderful start back to school. We have managed to squeeze lots in over the past 2 weeks: settling into class groups, interschool sports trials and training, election of Grade 6 house captains, brainstorming and creating class agreements, writing letters to our teacher and even attending the house swimming sports!
The 5/6 team this year is thrilled to welcome back Melati from maternity leave and celebrate the addition of Edan (from Grade 1) to our teaching team.
What’s Happening in the Classroom in the next Fortnight?
Reading: In weeks 3 & 4, students will be establishing expectations for independent goal-based reading. They will be ensuring they have appropriate reading material and working towards the goal of 20 minutes focused reading endurance. We have begun reading our cohort novel, Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda. Each week we will be completing a lesson focussed around this text. We aim to build comprehension skills, vocabulary enhancement and questioning skills.
Writing: In weeks 3 & 4, we will begin our first focus on narrative writing. We look at the writing process as a whole using various prompts to inspire our planning, drafting and editing. During this time we will also look at a revision of compound and complex sentences both as a reader and a writer.
Numeracy: In weeks 3 & 4, students will be working on our first unit, Data. We will be looking at various data sets from the Bureau of Statistics and analysing what the data is telling us about our community. They will be introduced to data terminology of mean, mode and range.
Inquiry: In weeks 3 & 4, we will make a start on our first unit of the year: ‘What’s the Matter? / Facts of the Matter!’ a chemical science-based unit. To kick start our inquiry we will begin by looking at states of matter and types of changes that can occur between states.
Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: In weeks 3 & 4, Willy Kids Wonder. In RR, we will be looking at emotional literacy and how emotions are shown by others and what we can do to recognise and support others.
Interschool Sport:
Week 2- Home V Newport Gardens
Week 3- Home V Altona
Week 4- Home V Seaholme
