We’re excited for another meaningful term of growth, learning, and shared achievements in Year 5.

Religion

Our strand for this term is Sacramental Church. Students will learn about the major Catholic feasts and seasons in the liturgical year and what the mission of the Church is to bring about the Kingdom/Reign of God. Students will also learn that the sacramental life of the Church nourishes the faith journey of its community. They will examine the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit and how these can be animated in the life of people.

English

Reading

Students will continue building their reading skills by identifying key information in our novel text, Holes by Louis Sachar, and other texts, including exploring how stories and information are shaped by cultural, historical, and social contexts. They will think more deeply about what they read by discussing both the literal and implied meanings, and how images, sound, and media features help create meaning.

Writing

In Writing, students will create Procedural and Poetry texts. They will focus on organising ideas clearly, using appropriate structures, and choosing language that suits the purpose and audience. Students will edit and improve their writing, learning how sentence structure and descriptive language can make writing clearer, more engaging, and more effective.

Mathematics

This term, students will continue to work on their number skills by choosing and using appropriate metric units to measure the attributes of length, mass and capacity, and to solve problems involving perimeter and area. Students will learn about Space by connecting objects to their two-dimensional nets. They will also conduct repeated chance experiments, list the possible outcomes, estimate likelihoods and make comparisons between those with and without equally likely outcomes.

Humanities

Our unit for this term is Civics and Citizenship. Students learn the roles and responsibilities of key institutions, including how legislation is made and law enforcement. They explain the different meanings of citizenship and the roles and responsibilities associated with different kinds of citizenship. Students develop questions to investigate civics and citizenship issues, using different sources, as well as explain their reasons to participate in democratic processes and deliberate on issues that affect their communities.

Science

Students will learn about Chemical Sciences by examining the properties of solids, liquids and gases. Students will also investigate changes to substances, learning to classify and compare reversible changes and irreversible changes. They will make reasonable predictions, plan and conduct scientific investigations, represent findings in different formats to analyse and communicate findings, in order to develop reasonable conclusions.

Capabilities

Throughout the term, students will continue to develop their personal and social skills to support their wellbeing and learning. They will practise managing emotions, coping with challenges, working independently, and seeking help when needed. Students are introduced to ethical and intercultural thinking by exploring equity, fairness and diversity in a range of contexts, and relate these to other curriculum areas. During this time, they are also taking more responsibility for their own health and personal safety.
