English

Reading & Viewing

In Reading, students will be exploring The One and Only Ivan a Newbery Medal-winning children's novel by Katherine Applegate, inspired by the true story of a captive silverback gorilla.   We continue to work on developing the comprehension skills needed to understand and respond to a variety of texts. Students are learning to identify key ideas, locate supporting evidence, and make literal and inferential interpretations. They will also continue to build their vocabulary by using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, strengthening their overall comprehension and confidence as readers.

Writing

Students have begun this term looking at narrative writing. Students will be encouraged to create engaging stories with clear structures, interesting characters, and appropriate language choices. Procedural writing teaches students how to explain how to make or do something clearly and logically. Students will be focussing on writing procedures and will learn to create procedures that are easy for a reader to follow and allow them to achieve a specific goal, using sequential language. Throughout the term, students will continue to develop neat and fluent handwriting, practicing correct letter formation using lower-case and upper-case letters.

Mathematics

This term in Mathematics, the focus is on multiplication and division and different strategies for solving these problems. Students will develop efficient strategies for solving multiplication and division problems and begin making strong connections between the two operations. Students will use materials, drawings, arrays, number lines and known facts to solve problems.

Students will be studying measurement and will be introduced to angles as measures of turn and begin comparing angles they see in everyday life, such as doors opening, clock hands and road signs. Students will investigate angles through turning their bodies, following directions, rotating objects and observing turns in the environment.

Humanities

Civics & Citizenship

In Humanities in Term 3, our focus will be on Civics and Citizenship. Students will learn about democracy, rules, laws, local government, community participation, and identity and belonging. The focus is on helping students understand how communities work and how they can be active citizens.

Capabilities

Personal and Social

This term students will continue to learn how to recognise and manage their emotions in the social context of the school, encouraging the development of their own resilience and confidence. These capabilities are learnt in a whole class or small group context and allows our students to learn how to work cooperatively with others,  developing an understandionh of how to be respectful. By building positive relationships students are able to resolve conflicts appropriately.
