Year One Newsletter

Welcome to term three. What a buzz we have had with everyone returning with big smiles and ready to see their friends and teachers. We are getting ready for a busy term ahead.  The students are teaching us all new things everyday, what an opportunity it is to learn and play together.

Please find information below about curriculum areas that will be covered this term.

Religion

This term we will be focussing on the Sacramental Churchb strand of the RE Curriculum. In this inquiry, students learn that through special celebrations we belong to different groups. That through Baptism we become a member of the Catholic Church.  We learn that Jesus was baptised by John the Baptist to symbolise his love for God.

Reading

This term we will be exploring Jackie French as our Author study with a continued focus on implied and explicit comprehension strategies to assist us to decode and understand the text. We are focusing on fluency, expression and decoding skills whilst reading. Every week we will be emphasising new words that appear in our stories. It is important that your child reads everyday with support.

Writing

As our students develop as writers, it is important for them to be exposed to a variety of texts. To begin the term, we are exploring Information Texts and Procedureal texts. Students will have the opportunity to delve into the world of writing, including the structure and features of these text types. Thsi includes the title, introduction, subheadings, information, facts, equipment and steps. As we develop as writers, we are still looking to incorporate descriptive words and add detail to our writing. Throughout the year, we will consistently be incorporating Colourful Semantics into our writing. This will enable students to develop their ability to use descriptive language, correct punctuation and a range of different connectives, which will enhance their writing.

Handwriting

When handwriting, we will continue to model correct hand grip, paper position, body posture and letter formation. Students write on dotted thirds to foster the appropriate size and position of letters.

Mathematics

Students will continue to explore the concept of addition and subtraction. Students will read, write, model and solve simple equations using a variety of strategies such as part-part whole, number lines, ten frames and manipulative materials. We will also explore the concept of patterns and the concept of repeating 2, 3 and 4 numbers and shapes. We will look for patterns in our everyday life and continue learning simple measurements such as heavy, light, more and less.

Science

This term students are investigating living and non-living things, with a focus on plants and animals.  We will be using the skills of observation and prediction.

Reminders for Term Three

Hats

Students are not required to wear their school hats for all outdoor activities as per our Sun Smart Policy.

Water Bottle

Students should still continue to bring a named drink bottle to school each day. Bottles can be refilled as needed during the day.

Home Learning

We ask that your child spends approximately 5 -10 minutes a night (where possible) reading aloud to a parent/guardian/older sibling and discuss what they have read. The students should continue to record their reading in their diary. This should include the name of the book or books they have read, which will be checked by their teacher every Monday.

Fruit Break

We have a fruit break each morning. Please ensure that your child brings fresh fruit or vegetables for this brain break.

Lunch Orders

The canteen will not be open this term except for special occasions such as the footy day. Please note the canteen has been suspended until a replacement Canteen Manager has been found.

Rubbish

In an attempt to reduce the waste our school produces, we encourage parents/guardians to pack a litter free lunchbox as much as possible.

Uniform

A reminder that children are to wear appropriate uniform — either full Winter or sports uniform on their designated sport day. If your child is not in their uniform, please let their classroom teacher know. If your child’s hair is longer than their shoulders, please remember to make sure their hair is tied back. Please refer to the School Uniform Policy on the school website.

Communication

Please make sure that concerns or questions regarding student learning are communicated via email to your child's teacher.  We are here to provide support. We look forward to working in partnership with you this term.
