There is more than one pathway
As students enter Term 3, many begin feeling pressure to make important decisions about life after school. Whether you're in Year 10 thinking about subject selection or Year 12 preparing for graduation, it's important to remember that there is rarely just one pathway to a successful career.
Many occupations can be reached through a variety of routes. University may be the right choice for some students, while others may begin with an apprenticeship, traineeship, TAFE qualification or direct employment. Some people even enter their chosen profession after working for several years and returning to study later in life.
The key is to focus on your destination rather than becoming fixated on one specific route.
Plans can change, interests can develop and unexpected opportunities often arise.
Career development is a journey, not a single decision. The most successful people are usually those who remain curious, adaptable and willing to keep learning throughout their lives.
If you don't have every detail of your future mapped out, don't worry—you are not alone. Instead, concentrate on making informed decisions, exploring opportunities and taking the next positive step.
There is no single "right" pathway. The best pathway is the one that helps you continue moving towards your goals
Apprenticeship recruitment season is here
Term 3 is an exciting time for students considering employment after school. Many businesses begin advertising apprenticeships, traineeships and school-leaver positions for commencement next year.
If employment is your goal, now is the time to be proactive rather than waiting for opportunities to appear.
Start by making sure your résumé is current and professionally presented. Ask someone you trust to review it and make sure it highlights your skills, work experience, volunteering, sporting involvement and achievements.
Many employers also recruit through the hidden job market. Visit local businesses, introduce yourself, ask about future opportunities and leave a copy of your résumé. A positive first impression can often lead to opportunities that are never advertised.
Don't forget to prepare for interviews. Be ready to talk about your strengths, why you're interested in the industry and examples that demonstrate your reliability, teamwork and willingness to learn.
Students who begin making connections now are often well placed when recruitment gathers momentum throughout Terms 3 and 4.
Every conversation, every application and every workplace visit is another step towards your future career.
Finalising Early Entry applications
For students planning to attend university, Term 3 is one of the busiest times of the year. Many universities have now opened their Early Entry applications, with several closing during the coming weeks.
If you are considering applying, don't leave everything until the last minute.
Review the eligibility requirements for each university, gather any supporting information and carefully complete every section of your application. Depending on the institution, applications may consider your Year 11 results, leadership, community involvement, personal achievements or personal statements.
It is also a good time to finalise your university shortlist. Consider course content, campus location, industry placements, graduate outcomes and support services—not just university rankings.
Remember that Early Entry is an additional opportunity, not your only opportunity. If you don't receive an Early Entry offer, you can still apply through the standard admissions process and there are many alternative pathways into higher education.
Staying organised now will reduce stress later in the year and help ensure you don't miss important deadlines.
A little preparation today can make a significant difference to your post-school options tomorrow.
