As we continue through the term, we would like to highlight the importance of positive school transitions and arriving at school on time.

For many students, the start of the school day can be a significant transition. Moving from home into the classroom requires students to shift their attention, organise themselves for learning and connect with their peers and teachers. A calm and predictable morning routine can make a big difference to a child’s confidence and emotional wellbeing.

When students arrive on time, they have the opportunity to:

settle into the classroom environment calmly
greet their teacher and classmates
participate in morning routines and learning activities
receive important information for the day ahead
begin the day feeling connected and prepared.

Arriving late can sometimes increase feelings of anxiety, particularly for students who find transitions challenging. Missing the start of the day may make it harder for students to join in with learning and social interactions already underway.

At Highton Primary School, students enter classrooms at 8.35 am, with learning beginning promptly at 8:45am. We encourage families to aim to arrive with enough time for children to unpack their belongings, say goodbye to family members and enter the classroom independently and confidently.

Supporting a Smooth Morning Transition

Families may find these strategies helpful:

prepare school bags, uniforms and lunches the night before
establish a consistent bedtime and morning routine
allow extra time for travel and parking
keep goodbyes brief, calm and reassuring
encourage children to use their classroom morning routine as a familiar starting point for the day.
