Important Reminders

• The Grade 5 maths curriculum assumes that all students know their multiplication tables. If your child is still working on this skill, we ask that you support them by finding some time to practise. If you would like suggestions about how to practise, please get in touch with your child's classroom teacher.
• Grade 6 Leaders sell icy poles each Monday and Tuesday at lunchtime for $1

STEM Room Donations Needed

We are currently collecting recycled materials for our exciting Term 3 Science Projects in the STEM room. We would greatly appreciate donations of clean items such as plastic water bottles or soft drink bottles, shoe boxes, plastic lids, and cardboard tubing or paper rolls (please no toilet rolls).

Donations can be dropped off at the STEM room at any time. Thank you for your continued support in helping provide valuable hands-on learning opportunities for our students.

Learning in Action

Word Work

Students will continue exploring the meanings of words derived from the Latin base vict-vince, meaning to conquer/overcome. 

Preview for learning:

Students will be introduced to the Latin base equ, meaning equal/fair. They will focus on how the addition of different prefixes and suffixes modify the base to create new meanings.

Literature

Students have embarked on a journey with Thomas Appleby as he faces his future as an orphan. We joined him for the back-breaking work up in the dark, dirty chimneys, scraping away soot, avoiding rats and helping a stuck, fellow chimney sweep. Our conscience was torn when Tom stole from a sleeping man. We know it was wrong, but he was stealing for his survival. We predicted Tom would get caught as we know he ends up being sent to Australia as a convict. We look forward to sailing with Tom as he heads to Australia as part of the first fleet.

Preview for Learning:

Drawing on the knowledge we built during Term 2 Knowledge Rich, plus extra supplementary reading and note taking we are doing this term, students will write an informative piece about the impacts of the Industrial Revolution on 18th century England; why convicts were sent to Australia; what life was like as a convict, and the impact their arrival had on Australia's First Nation Peoples. We are learning how to craft our topic sentence, how to provide supporting details and how to conclude our writing. We are also refining our note taking and in turn, refining our writing by using our notes.

➗ Maths

It has been a hands-on start to the term, learning about and constructing angles. Students were introduced to using a protractor, including how to align it correctly and identifying which scale to read - the inner or outer. They have been learning how to identify obtuse, acute, reflex, revolutionary and right angles. 

Preview for Learning:

Decimals: Students will round decimals, record decimals in standard and nonstandard form and rename decimals to solve problems. They will also find the connection between decimals and units of measurement.

Location: Students will identify and plot coordinates on a cartesian plane.

Measurement: Students will measure mass, length and capacity and choose the appropriate measuring units for each scenario.

Knowledge Rich

Students have made a start on our unit about Australian Democracy. Did you know Australian democracy draws inspiration from a blend of British and American political systems, appropriately referred to as the 'Washminster System’?

From the The British Westminster System, we have taken:

- Elected government forms a house of parliament

- Opposition members of parliament closely scrutinise the government

- A constitutional monarch who acts on the advice of the prime minister when necessary

From the US system of government we got:

- The names ‘Senate’ and ‘House of Representatives’

- Each state provides members for the Senate and the House of Representatives from each state is determined by the state’s population

The students were introduced to preferential voting by voting for their favourite ice cream flavours. The winners were: 5HA = choc mint, 5SA = choc mint, 5C = vanilla

Preview for Learning:

Students will continue building on their knowledge of Australian Democracy by learning about some of the country's Prime Ministers, discovering the actions taken by Stonemasons back in 1856 to establish the 8 hour work day, and learning about community groups and services such as the CFA, Surf Life Saving clubs and charities such as RSPCA.  

Wellbeing

Students enjoyed working with their buddies to reflect on the recent school holidays. Being a buddy allows students to demonstrate positive role modelling and to show care for others.

On July 30th we celebrated Friendship Day. Friends are important because, without them, people can become lonely. Loneliness can have a negative effect on the way we see ourselves, and the world. Having a friend to talk to, spend time with, share secrets with, laugh with and count on when we need help, creates a feeling of belonging and a connectedness to others. People need to have these feelings so that they can be healthy and happy in their mind and their heart. As a class we shared our ideas about what makes a person a good friend and how we can be a good friend to others.
