Swimming Program Term 3
- Grade 4 students will attend the swimming program on Thursday mornings in weeks 1-5. The buses will leave school at 8.50am and return at the start of recess.

📖 Literacy
Over the past few weeks, students in Grade 4 have been introduced to Roz, the main character from our class novel The Wild Robot, who was “turned on” for the first time whilst stranded in the forest. So far, through the novel, students have explored themes about survival, adaptation and curiosity. They have discussed how Roz has had to observe and learn from her surroundings, and how technology and nature is shaping her identity. Students have been introduced to different animals who live in the forest, discussed their interactions with Roz, and why they may initially be afraid of “the monster” who now shares their habitat.
The novel The Wild Robot has also generated rich discussion and enthusiastic research about Robots from the past, present and future. Students have taken notes, summarised information and begun to plan their persuasive letter with many noting that time, chores and companionship are all possible arguments to persuade the reader as to why every home should have a robot.
Students have also explored new vocabulary, such as disbelief, rigorous and surged, and used appositives to expand their sentences from simple to complex, through adding more detail about the noun in a sentence.
Preview: Grade 4 students will continue to read the novel The Wild Robot, and discover more about the challenges Roz will have to overcome. New vocabulary will be introduced and discussed. During writing, students will begin to draft their persuasive letter, beginning with the introduction.
🧠Knowledge Rich
Rules and laws have been discussed with students over the past few weeks, and Grade 4s were able to connect that both rules and laws are essential for society to be safe, inclusive and fair for everyone. Following rules and laws, students then unpacked the three tiers of government, federal, state and local, and what each tier was responsible for e.g. local - waste management, state - education, federal - immigration.
➗ Maths
Multiplication strategies have been the main focus of the past few weeks, and students have been introduced to vertical multiplication (expanded and contracted) with and without regrouping. This learning has seen students being able to organise and solve large multiplication problems using a clear method. They have also explored associative and distributive strategies to break apart and regroup numbers, helping them solve multiplication expressions efficiently. When learning about flow charts, students could identify the ellipses (beginning and end), the action step and the decision step. They were then able to input a number, and find the sequence using the flow chart steps.
Students have enjoyed learning how to identify different angles, including right, obtuse, acute, straight, reflex and revolutionary, and have used the set square measuring tool to find right angles in their environment.
Preview: Going forward, Grade 4 will review fractions, and then focus on equivalent fractions and ordering fractions on a number line.
🌿 Wellbeing
During the wellbeing drawing activity, students had to work collaboratively to create a “work of art”, without using any communication. This was a fun activity that resulted in some very interesting drawings, and highlighted how communication is an essential part of teamwork. We have also begun exploring individuality, and the class bingo game highlighted to students what makes them similar and different to others, and emphasised that it’s ok to be you!
Preview: We explore different stereotypes that exist in stories, jobs and films. They will learn that everyone is free to choose their interests and roles, without bias.
🏅 Sport in Grade 4
The students have made waves at Paul Sadler over the past few weeks, with the swimming program off to a fabulous start. We have seen students try their best, swim with confidence, and others stepping out of their comfort zone and giving it a go! We are so proud of the way the Grade 4s have been organised, behaved well, and participated in the swimming program so far. We cannot wait to see their continued progress over the remaining weeks.
🌟 Kinder Visit
This week, 4R had some special visitors! The kinder students came to LPS to enjoy a session in our Library and Curious Corner with their Grade 4 buddies. Together, they read a book and completed a colouring before exploring the Curious Corner, where they used their imaginations to become farmers, vets, bug specialists and wildlife warriors. The students loved working together to learn about caring for the animals they discovered in each of these exciting roles, making it a fun and memorable experience for everyone.
4E are looking forward to their turn in a couple of weeks time!
