📖 Literacy
Literature
Over the past fortnight, our literacy learning has been centred around the text ‘The Stone Lion,’ where students have been developing their sentence-level writing skills. We explored how to use possessive pronouns and adjectives to make our writing more detailed, engaging and varied, helping us to avoid repetition and create more interesting sentences.
We have also begun our exciting new mentor text, ‘The Snail and the Whale,’ which the students have thoroughly enjoyed! Using this beautiful story, we have been strengthening our comprehension skills by identifying both literal information and making inferential connections to deepen our understanding of the text.
This week, students used ‘The Snail and the Whale,’ as inspiration to create their own narratives. They carefully planned and wrote stories with a clear beginning, middle and end, ensuring they included all the key elements of an engaging narrative. We have been so impressed with the creativity and confidence our young authors have shown!
We also looked at the vocabulary words ‘significance’ and we drew something that was significant to us, as well as ‘courage’ by attempting to draw a lion with our opposite hands using courage!
Preview - Looking ahead, over the next week we will wrap up ‘The Snail and the Whale’ unit by writing friendship poems, focusing on creating verses that rhyme, have a strong rhythm, and convey a meaningful message about friendship. We will also commence a unit built around the text ‘Walking in Gagadju Country,’ where we will explore using conjunctions for sentence level writing. Word Work
We have been looking at the first job of the Silent Final E over the last fortnight in Word Work. We have been learning that:
➗ Maths
This term we have been working on multiplication and division concepts. Students have used concrete materials and drawing to represent arrays and equal groups. Students have made connections to addition by writing the repeated addition number sentence that matches the grouping, and they have been encouraged to skip count to find the total to ensure efficiency. Using bar models has been another tool that students have used to represent ‘groups of’.
This week, students have worked on sharing/dividing into equal groups with remainders. Students have also used number lines to work out the repeated subtraction number sentence to match.
Preview - Students will work on solving division problems using partitioning and use bar models to solve multiplicative word problems. Students will delve into a new unit which will focus on all four operations.
😊 Wellbeing
Over the first three weeks of Term 3, our wellbeing lessons have focused on help-seeking and building positive friendships.
In Week 1, students practised how to confidently ask trusted adults for help through role-play activities. In Week 2, we explored who they can ask for help, learning to identify trusted people and understand the difference between small, medium and big problems.
This week, students have been learning about 'Forgive & Forget,' through The Friend-o-cycle. We discussed how talking through friendship problems, showing empathy and understanding, and resolving conflicts allows us to move forward in our friendships. Students learnt that forgiving does not mean what happened was okay—it means choosing to move forward after repairing the friendship.
Preview - Over the coming weeks, the Grade 2 students will begin our next Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships unit on Gender Norms and Stereotypes. We will start by exploring our own interests, strengths and preferences, and recognising that these can be the same as or different from other people's. Students will learn to value everyone's unique skills and interests, helping them build resilience, develop positive relationships, and work and play together respectfully.
