• The Grade 5 maths curriculum assumes that all students know their multiplication tables. If your child is still working on this skill, we ask that you support them by finding some time to practise. If you would like suggestions about how to practise, please get in touch with your child's classroom teacher.
• Grade 6 Leaders sell icy poles each Monday and Tuesday at lunchtime for $1

Learning in Action

Word Work

Students continued exploring the meanings of words derived from the Latin base vict-vince, meaning conquer/overcome and then focussed on the Greek base, 'sphere', globe, round and the Latin 'equ' meaning even or fair. Part of the practise was playing a Jeopardy style game where they were given the definition and had to work out and spell the word.  When consolidating  'equ', students were presented with the web of morphemes and they tried to create as many words as possible in two minutes.

Preview for learning: 

'Rect' meaning set straight/right and 'clude/ cluse' meaning close or shut are the Latin base morphemes we will focus on in the upcoming weeks.

Literature

These past weeks, students have engaged in background reading and note taking on 18th Century England, the Industrial Revolution, the reasons why convicts were sent to Australia, what life was like as a convict, and the impact their arrival had on Australia's First Nation Peoples. They then planned, drafted and revised an introduction and three body paragraphs using present tense, precise nouns, describing words, third person pronouns, and words that tell where, when or how. 

Preview for Learning:

Students will complete writing their informative report by writing a conclusion and then revise and edit the piece to include subheadings, appositives or relative clauses, improve your word choices and make sure it flows well and keeps the reader interested. 

➗ Maths

This fortnight students continued to measure acute, obtuse and reflex angles, identifying regular and irregular polygons, and then applied this knowledge to tessellate polygons. They then strengthened their capacity to round decimals to two decimal places and record decimals in standard and nonstandard form. They ended the fortnight by renaming decimals to solve problems.  This was then followed up with a 'reteach, practise or extend' session  where students received targeted teaching at their point of need.

Preview for Learning:

To complete the unit on decimals, students will learn to use numbers with more than two decimal places for measurement of length and then they will use partitioning to compare mass.

Knowledge Rich

Students continued learning about Australian Democracy, reading about our notable Prime Ministers, and acknowledging the valuable contribution of the Stonemasons in 1856 to establish the 8 hour work day, recognised by Labour Day. They explored the actions taken by and learned about community groups and services such as the CFA, Surf Life Saving clubs and charities such as RSPCA.  

Preview for Learning:

In the upcoming weeks, students will discover that 'citizens working together to achieve a goal that benefits everyone' is the basis of Australian democracy. There are many challenges with people working together including miscommunication, motivation and coordinating efforts, but when we successfully achieve a civic goal and see results, we feel accomplished and this strengthens community connection.

Wellbeing

This fortnight students continued to explore the rollercoaster of emotions that can be experienced in a day and describe events or experiences that might trigger different levels of emotional intensity across a period of time. 

Circles, as always, was a big highlight and last week it was based on kindness.  Students completed some role plays and then created a kindness chain linking them together. 

This fortnight concluded with a Buddies session, where the Grade 5s worked with the Preps to find similarities and differences between themselves.
