School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) Update

We are excited to share the progress we are making in implementing our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework.

Over the past year, staff have worked together to streamline our behaviour expectations to create greater consistency across the school. Our three whole-school expectations are:

  • Be Safe

  • Be Responsible

  • Be a Learner

These expectations are displayed in every classroom and are supported by five key behaviours that we encourage across all school settings:

  • We are inclusive.

  • We keep our hands and feet to ourselves.

  • We listen to others and speak kindly.

  • We stay on task.

  • We ask for help.

Students are explicitly taught what these expectations look like in different areas of the school, helping them understand how to make positive choices in a variety of settings.

As part of this work, we have also clearly defined our minor and major behaviours, established consistent responses to behaviour incidents, and strengthened our processes for recording and monitoring incidents through Compass Chronicle. This helps ensure fairness, consistency and timely support for students.

To further support our work, new SWPBS signage is currently being developed and will be displayed throughout outdoor areas of the school, ensuring our expectations remain visible and relevant in students' daily experiences.

We are now entering an exciting phase of implementation where behaviour data is being used to guide decision-making. This information will help us identify trends, review school structures and supports, provide targeted assistance for individual students, and develop positive acknowledgement and reward systems that will be introduced in the coming months.

At PVNPS, we are committed to fostering a positive, safe and inclusive school culture where students are supported to make positive choices, develop strong relationships and achieve success.

Suitable Staff and Volunteers

Keeping children safe starts with ensuring that the adults who work and volunteer in at PVNPS are suitable, well-supported and committed to child safety.

What we are already doing

To promote a strong child-safe culture, we:

  • Follow child-safe recruitment practices, including referee checks and Working With Children Check (WWCC) requirements.
  • Provide thorough induction processes for all new staff, volunteers and visitors, including Child Safety, Code of Conduct and confidentiality requirements.
  • Ensure all staff complete annual child safety training and understand their duty of care responsibilities.
  • Maintain active supervision of staff and volunteers and provide ongoing guidance throughout the year.
  • Follow merit and equity processes when recruiting staff and carefully manage any conflicts of interest.
  • Require volunteers to complete inductions and provide appropriate screening documentation before participating in school activities.
  • Ensure volunteers are supervised when working with students and that any concerns are addressed promptly and appropriately.
  • Keep WWCC records and volunteer documentation on file and up to date.

What we are continuing to strengthen

We are continuing to improve our processes by:

  • Strengthening procedures for external providers working with students, including documentation and information-sharing requirements.
  • Providing volunteers with updated Child Safety policies as part of their induction.
  • Reviewing and updating volunteer management processes to ensure they remain aligned with best practice.
  • Continuing to build staff and volunteer understanding of their role in creating and maintaining a child-safe environment.

Our Commitment

Every adult who works or volunteers at PVNPS plays an important role in keeping children safe. Through strong recruitment, screening, training and supervision processes, we are committed to ensuring our school remains a safe, supportive and child-focused environment for all students.

Complaints Processes

At PVNPS, we want every student and family to feel safe, supported and confident to speak up if they have a concern. Child Safe Standard 7 focuses on ensuring complaints and concerns are listened to, taken seriously and responded to appropriately.

What we are already doing

To support a child-focused complaints process, we:

  • Have a Complaints Policy that explains how students, parents and carers can raise concerns.
  • Follow clear procedures for responding to child safety concerns through our Child Safety Responding and Reporting Obligations Policy.
  • Make our policies available on the school website and through the school office.
  • Ensure all relevant staff understand and follow complaint and reporting procedures.
  • Respond to concerns and complaints in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Maintain privacy, confidentiality and accurate record-keeping when managing concerns.
  • Display help-seeking information and support resources around the school to encourage students to speak up.

What we are continuing to strengthen

We are continuing to improve by:

  • Ensuring all classrooms and learning spaces have child-friendly help-seeking resources available and displayed.
  • Continuing to promote clear information about how students and families can raise concerns and access support.
  • Regularly reviewing our policies and processes to ensure they remain accessible, effective and child-focused.

Our Commitment

We encourage students and families to speak up if they have a concern. Every complaint is taken seriously, and we are committed to providing a safe, respectful and supportive process that helps protect the wellbeing of all children.
