Student Learning & Growth

Education is most powerful when it is shared. At Marist-Sion College, we believe that strong connections between home and school create the best environment for young people to thrive. When students see the important adults in their lives working together, they feel supported, understood and encouraged to do their best.
Parent–Student–Teacher Interviews are a key part of building and strengthening this partnership and are one of the most valuable touchpoints in a school year. They offer a dedicated moment for families and teachers to come together with a shared purpose: supporting each student’s growth. At Marist-Sion College, we view education as a partnership built on three keys pillars: students, teachers and parents/carers. Your role as the third pillar is essential.
While reports provide a snapshot of achievement, interviews bring that picture to life. They allow for meaningful conversations about progress, learning habits, strengths and areas for development. Most importantly, they create a space where students can be understood, not just as learners but as individuals with unique needs, goals and potential.
These conversations are particularly important as students begin thinking about subject selection. Choosing subjects can feel like a big decision, especially for younger students who are still discovering their interests and strengths. Parent–student-teacher interviews provide clarity during this process. Teachers can offer insight into a student’s abilities, engagement and readiness for different pathways while parents can share their child’s interests, aspirations and any concerns. When students are supported by both home and school in making these decisions, they are more likely to feel confident, motivated and invested in their learning journey.
As we move through Term 2, we will begin conversations about Subject Selection for 2027. This is an exciting time for students, though it can also feel a little overwhelming, so starting discussions early can make the process much more manageable. Toward the end of the term, students will participate in Year Level Briefings, have access to Careers Interview opportunities, and attend a Subject Selection Expo held at lunchtime, with an additional evening session for parents. To help begin these conversations at home, we encourage you to visit our website and explore the Subject Selection Handbook Curriculum Overview - Marist-Sion College; the 2027 edition will be available by the end of term.
Parent involvement more broadly plays a crucial role in student success. Research consistently shows that when families are engaged in their child’s education, outcomes improve not just academically but also in terms of wellbeing and motivation. This involvement doesn’t need to be complex. It can be as simple as asking about the school day, supporting homework routines, attending school events or maintaining open communication with teachers.
These small, consistent actions send a powerful message to students: that their learning matters.
By engaging in these opportunities and maintaining open lines of communication, families play an active role in shaping each student’s pathway. Together, we can ensure that every young person feels supported, informed and confident as they navigate their learning journey and plan for the future.
Bookings for interviews can be made via the Parent Access Module (PAM): https://pam.mscw.vic.edu.au and will close on Tuesday 28 April at 9.00m and reopen on Thursday 30 April, then will close again at 9.00am on Monday 4 May.
We strongly encourage all parents/guardians and carers to make a booking. If you have any difficulty accessing PAM, please contact College reception for assistance.
