How we teach students to regulate (not just expect it)

Just like reading, writing or mathematics, self-regulation is something that needs to be taught, modelled and practised.

At Skye PS, we use a range of consistent, whole-school approaches to support students to build these skills. This includes:

  • predictable routines that help students feel safe and prepared
  • regular check-ins, such as Morning Circle
  • adults modelling calm and supportive responses
  • explicitly teaching strategies students can use when they feel unsettled
  • develop Ready to Learn Plans

You might hear staff using language such as:

  • “I can see you’re feeling frustrated (angry, sad, upset, tired)"
  • “Let's see what strategy you could use from your Ready to Learn Plan"

This approach helps students to:

  • recognise their emotions
  • understand that all feelings are okay
  • develop strategies to manage those feelings

Over time, students become more independent in managing themselves, which has a direct impact on both their learning and wellbeing.
