For Parents

There are a lot of upcoming, free Parent Information Sessions on offer from Maroondah City Council, and also in collaboration with neighbouring councils, that may be of interest to your parent/carer community and/or school staff:

Be ahead of the game: talking to young people about gaming - May 14th, 7.30-8.45pm, online (details also emailed earlier today)

  • Join this free information session to understand how the blurred line between gambling and gaming is placing young people at risk of harm. Discover the gambling-like tactics and features used by the designers of many popular online games played by young people and discover how parents and carers can help to keep them safe. Children and young people are being exposed to gambling through gaming. This is an important presentation for parents of primary and secondary school aged children.
  • School Readiness - May 21st, 7-8.30pm, online
  • Starting school is a significant milestone. Understanding what matters when it comes to school readiness means you are well prepared to support your child in this important transition to school.
    This session will explore:
    • Positive connections with school and homelife
    • Developing self-confidence, independence and autonomy
    • A lifelong curiosity for learning
    • Promoting growth mindset

Managing Challenging Behaviours - June 11th, 7-8.30pm, online

  • Children’s behaviour can be challenging! This can come in many forms - talking back, complying with expectations, fighting with siblings and more. Parents and carers need a range of skills to understand and manage challenging behaviour and guide their children towards positive cooperation.
This session will explore what might underlie children’s challenging behaviour and how parents and carers can develop effective and proactive approaches to family discipline.

Parenting Journeys - June 18th, 7-9pm, venue to be advised upon registration

  • Caring for a young person who is gender questioning, trans, gender diverse or non-binary. No matter where you are on your journey as a parent or carer of a trans or gender diverse young person, we’re proud to partner with Transcend to offer this new workshop designed to improve communication and understanding between parents/carers and young people, and to strengthen family relationships.
