Hello Families,

It was fantastic having so many visitors come in for our Mother's Day afternoon. The students were delighted to share in such a special afternoon. We are looking forward to the Maths Open Afternoon next week. It is great to have so many opportunities to bring families into the classroom to connect with child's learning.

  • 1B have library on Wednesday. 1A, 1C and 1D have library on Thursday. Please remember to pack library bags or satchels on these days to be able to borrow.

What we are learning in Grade 1

In Literacy we have learned the sounds 'er' as in 'river monster cake', also represented by 'ir' as in 'dirty shirt' and 'ur' as in 'bursting balloons'. In their red home reading folder, there is your child's login for online decodable books and the new activities for those students who like to do extra practise at home. Our current mentor text is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. Students are jumping into the rich language and creating their own engaging sentences through the use of adjectives. Students are also practicing using 'because' in their writing to extend their ideas.

In Maths students have been having a blast collecting and displaying data. We love seeing students creativity and commination skills flexed in maths lessons as they decided topics to collect data on and interview others. These skills have also been shining during 'Number talks'. Have a look at some previous prompts and ask your child what they notice, we are constantly blown away by the links they find. Number talks are a fantastic way to highlight the maths that is all around us. They also help to develop language and reasoning skills as students explain their thinking. As you can see below anything can be a number talk, even things you find in your own home!

Our Inquiry unit this Term is all about helpers within our community. Year 1 have been learning about all the hard work our emergency service workers put in to keep us safe. Take a look at some of the informative posters that 1A and 1B made showcasing 000, Police, Fire and Ambulance.

Wellbeing

Term Two our focus is on teaching students a range of coping strategies to help children deal with emotions that can arise throughout the day. Learning skills to solve problems and face fears provides our children with skills they can tap into throughout their lives.

Students are continuing to earn Dojo points for displaying the Skye Primary School values relating to Respect, Responsibility, Resilience and Relationship.

Next term the students will be visiting Moonlit Sanctuary as part of their writing unit on Australian animals. The cost is $30. Permission forms will be sent out later this term.
