Prep Family Learning Night

Thank you to all our prep families for attending our family learning night on Tuesday 30th April.

During our session we focused on both Literacy and Wellbeing.

At St Martin de Porres we recognise that wellbeing is integral to learning excellence and ultimately to overall health and life success. A positive sense of wellbeing supports a base for rich learning that enables young people to flourish. During our family learning night we explored the topic of Emotional Literacy and used the circle time strategy to demonstrate how we can help students to learn to name different emotions.

What is circle time?

Circle time is a group way of supporting students to develop positive relationships and aims to provide students with the tools they need to engage with and listen to each other. Students from Prep to Six at SMDP have opportunities to engage in circle time activities as part of our wellbeing program.

Circle Time has many benefits for students.

These include:

  • Improved speaking and listening skills.
  • Increased self-esteem.
  • A sense of community.
  • An understanding of how their behaviour affects others.
  • Improved emotional intelligence.

Structure of Circle Time

  • Seated in circle (everyone is equal and included)
  • Three Important rules

Circle time can be used to address a range of topics

  • Sharing
  • Making friends
  • Using kind words
  • Working in groups
  • Managing emotions
  • Naming emotions and identifying feelings

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured.
