Tempo - The Flying Fruit Fly Circus

When the orchestra hasn't shown up and the audience is waiting, call the Flying Fruit Fly Circus!A highly distinguished musician has arrived to conduct their latest symphony, but the orchestra is nowhere to be found.

Fortunately, the Fruities are ready to save the day! And create chaos with the concert grand piano…

Directed by Jake Silvestro with an original score by Ania Reynolds, Tempo features an extraordinary ensemble of young performers aged between 12 and 18 who not only possess dazzling circus skills but also play instruments!

Shifting between striking aerial acts and highly choreographed acrobatic chaos, Tempo draws heavily on the traditional knockabout humour of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus – a trademark of the company over many years.

Magic, slapstick, juggling, balancing, acrobatics and aerials tumble in, out and around the concert grand piano. With no dialogue and plenty of gasp-inducing action, Tempo appeals to every age and is suitable, or perhaps essential, for all families.

Tempo is a delightful world of fun, acrobatics and infectious tunes. ‘No orchestra? No worries!’ say the Fruities, ‘How hard can it be?’.

The Fruities started building this show by jumping in, out and on top of a big white piano that sits centre stage for this show. It has been an incredible opportunity to work with these young acrobats, to play and discover what this tailored-for-circus instrument has to offer.

Phoney Film Festival

Alice Springs Town Council are excited to announce details for the 2024 Phoney Film Festival. The Phoney Film Festival has been a long running and successful event on the Alice Springs Calendar for the last 11 years. This year we are simplifying the nomination process and leaning into story telling. Young people aged 12-25 years are asked to make a short film up to 2 minutes in length made using a smart device.

The theme for this year is Community with young people simply being asked to tell a story of what community means to them without the restriction of categories or further guidelines.

Nominations can be submitted here prior to 17th June with selected films to be screened at the Alice Springs Cinema on Thursday 27th June. Individual and group nominations are welcome and there are cash prizes to be won!

Alice Springs Town Council will also be producing and distributing a ‘How To’ Media Package in the coming weeks and delivery workshops throughout Term 2.

Become a Beanie Maker for the Alice Springs Beanie Festival!

From June 21 to 24, 2024, the Alice Springs Beanie Festival will be taking place, celebrating its 28th anniversary with the theme of "Listen to the Land."

Five hundred beanie makers (from around the globe) shall create some of the world's best headgear and 6600 beanies are expected to descend on the Araluen Arts Centre for four days of exhibitions, Indigenous workshops, textile classes, live music, homemade tucker and a whole lot of fun, joy, warmth and colour.

7000 visitors from around the world attend and join in the excitement in the hunt for that perfect beanie. Chief Beaniologist , Jo Nixon, says "This year's Festival will the best one ever. We are planning for a huge success, and we are blessed to be able to include beanie artists from the remote Indigenous Communities of Central Australia creating opportunities for some lovely cross-cultural sharing with visitors. And, of course, we won't pull it off without the 120 volunteers giving their time and love to our special event."

It's never too early to start preparing, so make sure to download entry forms for Beanie Central and the National Beanie Competition and order swing tags for your beanies. Swing tags must be ordered before May 1st and entries received by May 31st. We're excited to see the unique and creative beanies that you come up with!

Variety NT Adventure Camp

Variety - the Children’s Charity NT would like to invite teenagers to participate in the 2024 Variety NT Adventure Camp.

The camp will be held from Saturday 29 June to Saturday 6 July 2024 at the Goanna Park Junior Police Rangers Youth Facility, 90km east of Darwin on the Arnhem Highway.

Each year, Variety NT runs the Adventure Camp for teenagers who have a mild to moderate disability. As part of the adventure experience, campers and carers/volunteers sleep outside in large screened tents and participate in various activities such as abseiling, flying fox, water sports, craft & talent shows.

The Adventure Camp program is designed to assist participants:

• gain self-esteem and confidence

• challenge their comfort zones

• develop life skills

• promote friendships with other participants with whom they can empathise

• experience social interaction on visits to attractions

Women of STEM

To help provide opportunities for young women, last year we launched our Women of STEM Scholarship for women aged 18-20 who are entering their first year of a STEM degree at university.

The Women of STEM Scholarship is a national program and provides women with financial grants of $5,000 per year for the life of their degree, up to a maximum of 5 years . This year we have awarded scholarships to three exceptional female students.
