College Captains Report

COLLEGE CAPTAINS REPORT (7/5/2024)

On the 21st of March, the college had their annual soloist’s night to showcase individuals or groups of performers at our college. A large number of students participated this year, ranging in talents from singing, to drums, to guitar, and saxophone. We were able to watch all these wonderful performers on the night, with Shannon even winning 3rd place in the senior category!

On the 26th of March, the college had their 2024 open night. The two college captains had the opportunity to make a speech to prospective parents and students, where we emphasised, the community feel of the college and our amazing teachers who go above and beyond for us students. We, as well as our other senior captains, certainly enjoyed leading tour groups around our college and speaking to students from different primary schools about their interests and their excitements/fears of entering high school. We were also able to answer many questions.

The year 12 formal was a huge success and a fantastic night thanks to our amazing coordinators Mrs Miller and Mr Palser. Everybody looked terrific and lots of photos were taken to document the memorabile evening. Much of the night was spent dancing and singing on the dancefloor – heels were taken off pretty quickly! This will most definitely be a highlight for the year for most year 12’s – a magical evening spent dancing, singing, and laughing with friends.

In the first week of this term, on the 18th of April, we had our annual athletics carnival. It was a bit chilly on the day, but nothing that tough Koo Wee Rup kids can’t handle. It was great to see so many students participating in events and giving things a go to earn points for their house. The scoreboard was watched closely all day, with points tight between Bass and Sturt all day. In the end, Sturt – the best house - finished with a one-point win.

Three girls’ netball teams – junior, intermediate, and senior – participated in interschool netball. They had great success, with all three teams winning their division and advancing to the next rounds in late July and early August!

On the 25th of April, the college band, along with the college captains, headed off early to the city to march in the annual ANZAC Day parade. The college band has been marching in the parade for 25 years and are eager to continue this tradition. The day started at 5:30am for the college captains who attended the Koo Wee Rup dawn service, laying a wreath on behalf of the college. We were honoured to be able to represent the college at such an important community event. After many hours of practice, we successfully marched up St Kilda Road towards the Shrine of Remembrance, even having our moment of fame on the livestream of parade, and later again on the ABC news.

At the end of last week, the four college captains conducted focus groups with their year 12 peers to collect feedback and ideas for improvement of the senior school. All students were actively engaging in discussions and were excited that they were able to have their voices heard, and for this to be conveyed to our senior team. Currently we are awaiting the appointment of junior school leaders who we plan to meet with in the coming weeks to ensure that we are capturing a holistic voice of the college. One of our goals as a leadership team this year is to improve the participation of junior students in feedback avenues such as SRC to allow us to be truly representative of the student body and allow them an opportunity to express their opinions.

Last Friday, the year 11 and 12 students made their way independently to the Melbourne Exhibition Centre to attend the 2024 VCE careers expo. This is a great opportunity for students to investigate and explore different pathways, courses, and universities. All students have access to university websites to investigate different pathways, however, the expo provides an opportunity to speak with students at different universities about their experiences and ask any questions they may have. Additionally, every year there is a competition amongst students for the highest number of pens collected from the different stalls – a fun (and competitive) highlight!

Last Friday, the annual music festival took place. House captains have been working hard for weeks to choreograph dances and musical entertainment. Additionally, a group of year 12 students were also working hard to choreograph a year 12 dance to beat the teachers in the staff vs year 12 competition. It is a highlight of the school year for students, and we were all excited to see all their hard work finally up on the stage. At this time, we don’t have results of the competition but there will most definitely be updates in our meeting on Tuesday.
