Wellbeing

Positive Behaviours for Learning

As part of our ongoing development as a PBL school we continue to explicitly teach & model expectations from our matrix.

The foci for the next couple of weeks are:

Respect

We are patient

We use our manners

We use kind words and actions

We think before we speak

Responsibility

We move in a safe way

We follow the rules of games

Resilience:

We include others

We learn from our mistakes

These expectations will be explicitly taught during Wellbeing Hour & revisited throughout the days.

It would be great if you could also reinforce these expectations at home and ask your child/children how they are following these at school.

Child Safe Standards

Over the next few newsletters we will revisit the child safe standards and highlight what actions we are taking at OLSC to ensure the standards are being followed. In Victoria there are 11 Child Safe Standards, which are underpinned by the following mantra:

All children have the right to be safe and feel safe all of the time.

The Child Safe Standards aim to:

  • promote the safety of children
  • prevent child abuse
  • ensure effective processes are in place to respond to and report all allegations of child abuse.

Standard 1: Culturally safe environments

Schools must establish a culturally safe environment in which the diverse and unique identities and experiences of Aboriginal children, young people and students are respected and valued.

Actions to Meet this standard at OLSC include:

  • Acknowledgement of Country at all gatherings and meetings
  • Australian & Aboriginal flag flown daily
  • Embedding Aboriginal histories and cultures when planning curriculum for students as demonstrated in the Victorian Curriculum F–10.
  • Developing a resource bank of digital, hard copy and other artefacts that support the inclusion of Aboriginal content across the curriculum
  • Message stick displayed in the foyer and used regularly at school events
  • Recognition of key events such as Harmony Day
  • Engaging with local Aboriginal communities via Traditional Owner groups
  • Incorporating aboriginal perspectives across all areas of the curriculum

Standard 2: Leadership, governance and culture

Schools must ensure that child safety and wellbeing is embedded in school leadership, governance and culture.

Actions to Meet this standard at OLSC include:

  • Child Safety Code of Conduct for all staff signed yearly
  • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
  • Child Safety Commitment Statement displayed on signage around the school
  • Regular open discussions on child safety issues within the school community, including at leadership team meetings, staff meetings and planning meetings
  • Communicate and demonstrate that mistreatment of students and racism are not tolerated in any way, and that students who speak out are listened to and taken seriously.
  • Ensure students’ views are taken seriously and their voices are heard about decisions that affect their lives
  • Implement MACS Child Safety and Wellbeing Procedures
  • Established a Child Safety Team
  • Publish policies on school website

Standard 3: Child and student empowerment

Schools must ensure that children, young people and students are empowered about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously.

Actions to Meet this standard at OLSC include:

  • Student Leadership Roles
  • Year 5 student leadership day
  • SRC Team Charter
  • Implement regular whole-school wellbeing assessment surveys e.g. ACER SEW
  • Establish student focus groups to analyse survey data
  • Buddy program for Prep students
  • Teach students practical protective strategies
  • Deliver age-appropriate curriculum content about respectful relationships
  • Support all students to identify trusted adults and friends they can talk to about a concern at school, at home or in the community.

Casual Clothes Day

Nude Food Day

Nude Food Day is all about reducing the amount of rubbish that is generated by our lunch boxes.

Our intention is to educate students to think about the amount of packaging they bring to school each day, and the impact this has on our environment.

This is a day where we highly encourage all students to have a lunchbox free of food wrappers, such as chip packaging, glad wrap or aluminium foil. You must carry your food in reusable containers and packaging that can’t be thrown away.

The benefits are positive for our environment.

Nude Food Days helps because…

  • Reducing the amount of packaging, reduces the amount of rubbish that goes to landfill.
  • This also decreases the amount the greenhouse gases generated in producing the additional packaging, creating a more sustainable environment.
  • Pollution is decreased

Sustainability Team will visit each Learning Group on May 30th and measure which group has the least amount of rubbish on this day.

Together we can make a difference

Feel free to email me at: shenderson@olscwyn.catholic.edu.au or call the school office if you have any concerns or need help at any time.

Cheers
