Performing Arts

Foundation students have been exploring their movement ideas on the spot, around our space, with friends and using stimulus. The students recently created their own movement ideas as ‘growing gardens’. Students needed to create their own dance movement to showcase a growing flower, plant, grass or trees. Students worked in small groups to practice collaborating with peers and then performed their ideas in front of the class. Over the rest of the term we will learn a short dance routine and work together to develop our own dance ideas.

The Grade 1 and 2 students have been exploring dance through choreography devices. The students learnt about repetition and levels in their movement and how these 2 devices can assist their dance creation. Students recently worked on a short dance routine with a group of peers, where they had to select 3 dance movements and repeat them over and over again. Students were challenged to incorporate levels in their body action by reaching up high or dancing lower to the ground.

Students in Grade 3 and 4 have been using the Elements of Dance to structure their learning. Students needed to describe the way they used each element in their dance routine with friends. Students practiced across 2 sessions and performed their dance in front of their peers. Student’s creativity has been a focus at the start of this term as they showcase their own movement ideas and collaborate with peers.

Grade 5 and 6 students have also structured their dance ideas with the use of the elements of dance and are moving on to learn about 4 choreographic devices that can make their dance appear more exciting from an audience perspective. The students have learnt about demonstrating repetition, levels, cannons and freestyle throughout their performances in order to further develop their dance routines and dance skills.
