Initia Lit- Reading
What an exciting two weeks it has been in Initial Lit! We've been introduced to some new friends and sounds – Cody Camel, Danny Dingo, and Hannah Hippo! These friendly characters have been helping to make learning letter names and sounds that little bit easier.
In our StoryBook sessions, we've explored the stories 'Farmer John’s Tractor' and the classic tale of 'Puss in Boots'. We've delved into the beginnings, middles, and ends of these stories. Along the way, we've uncovered the meaning of some pretty fancy words like "trusty", "stranded", "gushes", "generous", "bellowed", and "magnificent".
We have continued using our sound knowledge to segment and blend CV (consonant vowel) and CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. They've been having a go at reading words like "dot", "dam", "mad", "dip", "sad", "cat", and "cod".
And, we have also introduced some tricky words – words that have tricky parts that cannot be sounded out! We've regularly practised and looked at "a", "the", "my", "is", and "I".
It's been an absolute joy to watch our Preps soak up all this new knowledge like little sponges.
Maths -
Our prep students have been reviewing 2D shapes and their features in maths. Last week, we learned about the shapes and continued our exploration by introducing three new shapes this week: the triangle, rectangle and square. We examined the difference between squares and rectangles, as well as the features of a triangle. We explored these concepts by building the shapes with blocks, drawing them and making them with playdough. Some students even got creative and drew a whole picture using only one shape of their choice. We had a great time learning about these shapes and we look forward to pointing them out in real-life scenarios.
This week, we expanded our number knowledge by confidently counting from 1-10 and showing the value of these numbers through collections, fingers, number lines and ten frames. We engaged in hands-on activities where we practised counting and making collections to test our number knowledge. We discussed the formation of the numeral and then practised representing the number in different ways using chalk, mini-whiteboards and tracing activities..
Integrated -
In integrated, Preps have continued their learning journey ‘All about me.’ We have looked at how we have changed as we have grown from a baby to a Prep student, and this week looked at what makes our family unique and special. We have continued creating our own puzzle pieces which will come together to make a puzzle at the end of the unit.
In Respectful Relationships, we have learnt about what personal strengths are, and which strengths we have as individuals. We have also played the fast emotions game, where students had to quickly show what emotions such as happy, excited and sad, looked and felt like in their bodies.
