News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden
Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday
We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.
No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.
If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)
In Cooking this week Grade 2 and 3 made Veggie Taco Rice, Mexican Spiced Roast Pumpkin and Tomato Salsa. All the dishes were gluten free and fat free.
From the garden we used, Red Kauri pumpkin, Zucchini, Juan flame tomatoes, coriander, cucumber, chives and green onions. We also used dried oregano and coriander seeds we dried last year.
Grade 2 students paired up with Grade 3 students to support each other and share their cooking skills.
This week students learnt how to chop pumpkin and zucchini into small pieces, chop herbs finely and peel and chop onions and cucumber into small pieces for the salsa.
Aleida, Ella, Marlin, Elijah and Noah, Owen and their team worked well together to cook veggies and spices and sauce to make the Veggie Taco rice.
Our new students enjoyed their first cooking class and worked well with their team. Percy and Elijah learnt how use a knife safely to cut the zucchini into small pieces for the Veggie Taco Rice.
Noah and Jayden worked with Johnny and Emma’s group to chop and deseed the tomatoes for the Tomato Salsa and Spiced Roast Pumpkin dish. Emma’s group chopped and prepared all the ingredients for the Mexican Roast Pumpkin and the toppings and the Tomato Salsa. Pete worked with Oliver, Douglas and their team to chop and squeeze the limes and then chop and blend the ingredients for the Tomato Salsa.
While we were cooking, Emma showed students how to rinse the dishes and load the dish washer and stack the clean dishes, so we had less to clean up at the end of the session.
It was great to see everyone work together to clean up and set the table ready for us to share the delicious dishes we cooked. Johnny, Aleida, Owen and their teams enjoyed carefully plating up the dishes ready for us to share.
While we enjoyed the delicious Mexican inspired feast, students shared what they thought about the food.
Oliver said it was satisfying when the food goes into the bowl and the pumpkin and the cheese tastes good.
Marlin said, “I cooked the Veggie Taco Rice dish and it is my favourite out of the two dishes.
Noah had seconds of the rice and said it had a nice taste.
Percy tried the rice and said it was OK.
Pete said the Veggie Taco Rice was surprising and tasty.
Jayden said, “I liked the Veggie Taco Rice because I like tacos.
Mel said, Thanks for the plate of Veggie Taco Rice and Mexican Spiced Roast Pumpkin and Salsa, I gobbled it all up!”
Well done Emma and Grade 2 and 3, it was a great cooking session.
