NAPLAN testing finishes up today for our Year 7 and 9 students. A big thankyou to all the staff who conducted the testing and assisted with technical issues. To the students, well done on giving it your best shot.
The year 8 students returned full of excitement from camp last week. Many thanks to Mr McCallum, Mr Ryan and Miss Smith for accompanying the students.
It was a super proud moment on Tuesday, to look around at all our students in Years 7 to 9 and see them all in full school uniform for school photos. Thanks all. Wear the uniform proudly!
Weekly Wrap: Year 9
Advisory: In Advisory, the Year 9’s have had Julie Bourke visiting for the last few Tuesdays to complete an introduction into the Broader Horizons program. Students will explore individual careers later in May. Over the last two weeks, students have also been completing the NAPLAN assessment. It was great to see them begin this assessment with a great mindset!
Health: Students have been exploring the difference between emotions and feelings and developing their own Window of Tolerance templates. At the beginning of each lesson, students also have had the chance to choose a podcast in an area they would like to focus on. We have some listening about netball, fitness, mindset, football and how to set successful goals.
Humanities:
Year 9s have been learning to analyse sources in Humanities. Their improved ability to feel empathy for historical people, and articulate their perspectives has been especially rewarding, as they navigate the challenging topic of slavery.
Food Technology:
This term the Year 9’s have enjoyed cooking, Aussie Beef Burgers, Chicken Parmigiana and Chips, Stir Fried Beef with capsicum and broccoli, Apple Strudel, and Cheesy Chicken Risotto.
Year 8 Surf Camp:
Last week our Year 8’s ventured south to the coast of Torquay with Mr Ryan, Miss Smith and Mr McCallum. The bus and car ride down were full of excitement conversation and singing!
We were blessed with near perfect weather conditions for the three days. On Wednesday the group went straight into their first surfing lesson at Torquay Surf Beach. Our 3 instructors Archie, Rob and Jesse from Southern Exposures got everyone kitted out with wetsuits and a surfboard and taught us how to paddle to catch a wave them pop up to ride it! The Year 8’s took to surfing like a duck to water! With many popping up to standing in on their first few waves!
Thursday morning the year 8’s took to the Coastal Bike Trail riding through two national parks along the coastline back into Torquay. They rode past the famous Bells beach and described how they would have caught many Barrels out there on the pro tour now they know how to surf after Wednesday’s lesson.
Thursday afternoon we again took to the water with a Sea Kayaking session. The year 8’s paddled around a reef at “Cosy Corner” on Torquay main beach then caught some waves back into the beach. This was defiantly a highlight of the camp.
Friday the Yr 8’s showed off their new skill in surfing with all students getting to their feet and “hang’n 10” on many waves. Some students performed tricks on the waves including 180 jumps and lying backwards on the board.
A big thank you to the team at Southern Exposures for having Charlton College again and a big thank you to the staff who attended the camp to make it possible!
