Weekly Wrap: Foundation

Literacy

Students have been introduced to their third ‘set’ of sounds in their phonics program and are continuing to make amazing progress remembering their sounds and putting them together to read and spell words. Lizzie would like to say a special thank-you to families for practising sounds and words at home – regular home practice helps students to become fluent readers. In our Language and Literature unit, students discovered a ‘magic pot’ in the classroom. We put in one block, and the next day we checked it and found seven blocks. Next, we tried it with counters, and the same thing happened! Students decided that we should see if the magic worked on chocolate too, so we placed in one Easter egg and when we checked the next day, we had seven eggs! This was a perfect lead-in to our text-based unit on ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, Foundation students are completing a unit on counting and place value, learning the numbers to 10 and working hard on their number formation. They are enjoying their ‘Daily Reviews’ and learning about our ‘number of the day’ as we count our first 100 days of school. This year in F-6, the College is implementing the ‘Top Ten’ maths program which allows students to experience plenty of hands-on learning opportunities alongside our explicit instruction. Foundation students have loved using picture story books, maths manipulatives and everyday objects to bring numeracy concepts to life.

F/1/2 Humanities

Last Thursday the F/1/2 students were busy conducting interviews to gather information about various staff members experiences during their childhood. Students were the interviewers and should be commended on the way in which they responsibly and respectfully conducted the interviews. They created questions to ask various members of staff about their childhood to be able to compare the differences between their childhood and childhood in ‘the olden days!’.  They were amazed to find out that Ms. Gadsby didn’t get to choose all her subjects in High School as girls participated in certain subjects as did the boys. The group of students that interviewed Mrs. Fitz enjoyed seeing a photo of her favourite childhood toy, a pull along dog.

Book Review by Audrey

Audrey recommended 'Unicornia, Learning to Fly’, by Ana Punset. This is a fantasy and fairy tale set in the magical land of Unicornia. The main characters are Claudia, Pippa, Sara, Mum, Dad, Bly the horse and Mr Trot. Claudia is new and having an exam for flying. She is worried but in the end she did very well. Audrey rates it 4.5 out of 5 stars and recommends it for students in Grade 1-4.
