Senior Visual Arts take on MONA

Senior Visual Art students enjoyed an afternoon at Hobart's famous Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) recently. Tasked with exploring the collection and gathering resources for their own artmaking, students observed world-famous icons of the art world in the current exhibition "Namedropping".

In other parts of the gallery, students came across an interactive artwork that involved them taking rubbings (frottage) using graphite, of slabs of stone collected from the site of the atomic bomb exploding in Hiroshima.

The works by the students were collected by the artist to be added to the evolving exhibition. We are very lucky to have a world-class gallery such as MONA on our doorstep.

Fun at Year 7 Camp!

Our Year 7 students have enjoyed a stay at the Spring Beach Youth Camp in Orford recently.

With plenty of smiles and laughs to go around as students faced treetop adventures and kayaking thrills, it was certainly wonderful to see the cohort bond together.

Well done to the students for their enthusiasm and a big thank you to all of the staff who assisted.

Pancake day fun!

Recently we celebrated Shrove Tuesday to mark the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. The term 'shrove' means to obtain from absolution of one's sins, by way of confession and by doing penance.

Students had the opportunity to purchase pancakes at lunchtime, with all proceeds raised going towards Project Compassion for Caritas.

A big thank you to our Vinnies and Mission students for their assistance.

Ash Wednesday

Last week we celebrated Ash Wednesday to mark the beginning of the Lent season.

Students learned about the importance of using this liturgical season of Lent as a moment for reflection in a liturgy with their Pastoral Care Groups. These ashes were placed on each student's forehead and were made from the palm branches used in last year's Palm Sunday services.

Dance the morning away!

Our Year 9/10 Dance class enjoyed a special guest choreography session this morning from Nicole Rossan as the class prepares for the Southern Tasmanian Dance Eisteddfod.

Students listened intently to Nicole's expertise as they showed off their best moves and continued to work hard before they will compete in July.

Applying their knowledge to potential career pathways!

Our Year 11/12 Sport Science students got a taste of life as a High-Performance athlete with a visit from Dr Georgina Vernon of the Tasmanian Institute of Sport.

Students gained insight into how talent identification works in Tasmania and worked on their knowledge of biochemicals using real-time analysis.

The group will visit the TIS in Term 3 to further examine the principles of exercise physiology and potential career opportunities through a sport science pathway.

Celebrating International Women's Day and this year's theme of 'Accelerate Action'.

Year 12 students Rebecca and Natasha joined Deputy Principal, Alanna Stretton and Teacher, Frankie Flanagan, at this year's Australian Defence Force IWD Leadership Morning Tea to discuss how they can #MarchForward in their careers.

This year IWD sees deep and meaningful conversations being held worldwide on how we can all #AccelerateAction for gender equality within our own community. Here at MacKillop, it is wonderful to see the women within our College exploring a variety of pathways and opportunities in sport, science, making and design, technology and more.

Sunshine Coast ready!

Rehearsals for the Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod are in full swing! Our dedicated students are rehearsing twice a week in preparation for the competition, which will take place in May.

To support this exciting opportunity, we are hosting a major fundraiser at Bunnings Warehouse, Mornington, on Sunday 30 March.

Come along and grab a sausage to help us get to the Sunshine Coast! Your support will make a huge difference for our talented dancers.

A night to remember!

Our Year 10 students enjoyed the opportunity to kick up their heels and celebrate as a cohort at their Year 10 Welcome to Senior School Dinner.

Students enjoyed a delicious meal as they danced the night away to the sounds of a DJ and the new MacKillop Staff band!

What a wonderful chance to welcome our Year 10 students into their final few years of education at MacKillop Catholic College, it was certainly an evening to remember.
