Year 2

Welcome to Week 9

Curriculum Night

Fiona and I were impressed to see so many of the parents that attended the Curriculum Presentation were parents of students in Year 2. It speaks great volumes in your attentiveness to your child's education and we appreciated your questions and input. If you were not able to attend, reach out to Fiona Robinson and she has the presentation available to parents and can answer any questions you have.

You are Welcome.

Keen to know what a Literacy or Numeracy session looks like? Please get in touch and we can let you know what time we will be doing either lesson. Parents of students in InitiaLit Sage, our Literacy Intervention Program, you are also very welcome to sit in on your child's session with Denise Hall or Fiona Robinson.

You are always welcome.

InitiaLit

Our recent Story book lessons have focused on The Lost Girl by Ambelin Kwaymullina. and we are just beginning The Stone Lion, Margaret Wild and Ritva Voutila.

It would be wonderful to share these stories at home and ask your child what they have learnt through the stories.

Spelling

We completed lessons 1-12 in the first half of the term and now focus on lessons 13-24 to complete our term one learning sequence for Spelling. Please see the picture below of the phonemes and spelling patterns that we have covered.

In Term 2, Students will have spelling words sent home for extra practise. In the meantime, practicing the recent tricky words at home would be advantageous.

caught, people, who, something, what, ask, really.

Numeracy

Here is our Year Overview, newly published and tweaked from its original form to start the year. Teachers are most grateful for the structure that Ochre gives us.

We are well into our unit in measurement. Concepts included time; reading analogue and digital clocks; duration of time; calendars and reading timetables. Next we look at addition and subtraction to round out Term One learning.

Religion

We have jumped into our learning about Lent and Easter. Children will be learning about what Lent is, recalling the events of Holy Week and what happened to Jesus in the lead up to his death. They can associate symbols with the events of Lent and Easter. Children attend some significant Masses and liturgies during this time. We will conclude the term with the Stations of the Cross. See the school newsletter for the confirmed time and date.

Inquiry Learning

We are looking more into our History now and how things from the past can give us clues or tell us what life would have been like. In the next few weeks we will go for a walk around town and look at the old buildings that make up Euroa. Children are welcome to bring in artefacts from the past (old things) that they would like to share with the class. It is always lovely to go back in time!

The Resilience Project

We will again be learning from the Resilience Project Curriculum, so far focusing on emotional intelligence. As we only complete one lesson per week, we haven't yet had much of a chance to share with you what we have learnt. Our next few topics are around spreading kindness, settling into Year 2, exploring how we feel and how we show empathy.

GEM chats are a great way to have a conversation with your child without them giving you a yes/no response. Why not try this on the way home, to dance class, before bed or on a weekend?

Harmony Day

Harmony Day took place on March 21st. It was wonderful see so many crazy socks to celebrate this special day.

If you have any concerns, questions or stories to share, please feel free to email me rtimperley@sjeuroa.catholic.edu.au or Fiona frobinson@sjeuroa.catholic.edu.au. We are available before school 8-8.30 Monday to Thursday. Please keep in mind that we have staff meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

Until next time,

Rachel, Fiona and Lisa.
