Year 5

Term 1 - Week 9

Welcome to our classroom communication page for term 1. Here you will see and learn all about what we have been up to in Year 5, as well as what is coming up over the next few weeks.

KEY DATES:

Thursday 27th of March: School Photo Day

Tuesday 1st of April: Pupil Free Day

Friday 4th of April: Stations of the Cross Assembly and final day of term.

Literacy

We recently completed our first text of the year, War Horse. A wonderful story from a horse's journey from a farm to the battles happening throughout WWI. We completed two writing focuses throughout, with narrative and persuasive texts covered in the lead up to NAPLAN assessments.

We’re diving into an exciting new read! Roma Agrawal’s book, 'How was that Built' .  This novel is packed with amazing stories about how bridges, tunnels, and skyscrapers are built—plus the genius ideas that make them stand tall. From the Pantheon to The Shard, it’s a fascinating look at engineering through history. With interesting facts about materials, design, and problem-solving, this book is both super informative and a celebration of amazing engineers—especially women in the field. We can’t wait for the kids to explore it!

We’ve also been focusing on both touch typing and handwriting to help students develop essential writing skills. With touch typing, they’re working on speed and accuracy, making digital writing more efficient. At the same time, handwriting practice is helping them improve legibility, fluency, and confidence when writing by hand.

Both skills are important for clear communication, and regular practice at home can make a big difference! Encourage your child to use proper posture and finger placement when typing and take their time to form letters correctly when writing.

Mathematics

We’ve been busy exploring factors and multiples, and now we’re diving into multiplication and division! Students have been working with the area model to understand multiplication visually, and soon they’ll move on to the formal algorithm. These strategies help build a strong foundation for problem-solving and mental math. Keep an eye out for practice activities coming home, and encourage your child to explain their thinking—it’s a great way to reinforce learning!

Religion

In our latest unit, students are deepening their understanding of prayer as a relationship and its role in daily life.  Our students have been learning about LENT, and they have written a 'Spiritual' and a 'Sacrifice' goal. I wonder if they have told you about this? Some have set their spiritual goal to not fight with their brother or sister and to help out at home more, without being asked. Let's hope you are seeing extra kindness in your house over the 40 days of the Lentern season. The sacrifice goal was giving up something, like lollies or chocolate, because of the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for us.

We have 9 more days to go before holidays. If we don't see you, we hope you have a fantastic and restful holiday and we look forward to seeing you all next term.
