PYP in Action
This term, our senior students have explored two rich and thought-provoking Units of Inquiry: Sharing the Planet and How We Organise Ourselves. These units have provided opportunities to make personal connections, reflect on the world around us, and think critically about the systems that shape society.
Sharing the Planet
Central idea: A fair, peaceful, and better future is shaped by the choices we make together.
In this unit, students investigated important ideas around inclusion, diversity, conflict resolution, and social responsibility. Through literature (particularly the text Wonder), personal reflection, and classroom discussions, students considered how perspective and empathy help us build a more just and peaceful society. This unit culminated in students creating TED-style presentations advocating for fairness, acceptance and change — many choosing topics close to their hearts, such as racism, disability, and neurodiversity.
How We Organise Ourselves
Central idea: Organisations are established to maintain structure and function.
Students have been exploring how societies are governed — examining the roles of local, state and federal governments, learning how laws are made, and comparing government systems from around the world. As part of their summative task, students designed their own fictional countries, complete with systems of government, laws, and values. This creative project brought together critical thinking, collaboration, and real-world knowledge in a meaningful and engaging way.
Looking Ahead – PYP Exhibition Begins Next Week
Next week marks the launch of our most exciting inquiry of the year: the PYP Exhibition.
This is a milestone experience in the Primary Years Programme. Students will take full ownership of an inquiry into a topic they are passionate about, exploring a central idea they develop themselves. The Exhibition falls under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time and will include inquiries into historical events, cultural identity, migration, and social change.
To begin, students will participate in a series of provocations designed to spark curiosity and help shape their thinking and direction. They will then work in small groups to research, reflect, take action, and prepare to present their findings to the school community.
