Sustainability

There have been lots of valuable projects getting completed in Sustainability this term.

During Term One, the students were involved in monitoring the Nesting Boxes, which are located around the Mullinmur Billabong. We were fortunate to have Sally Martin from Ovens Landcare join us with this project and provide education regarding the types of species that inhabit the nesting boxes and also assist us in creating a useful way to use the data we collected during the monitoring.

Borinya was fortunately successful in gaining some funding from the Inland Rail Community Grant, which enabled us to buy three new high-tech trail cameras, which we used to monitor the nesting boxes and captured lots of amazing footage after the sun goes down!

Over the Semester, students have been actively engaged in hands-on learning experiences at the Mullinmur Billabongs. As part of our environmental science and sustainability focus, students have been conducting water testing, exploring the health of the water systems through water bug sampling, and observing the presence of fish species in the area.

These investigations have helped students develop a deeper understanding of local ecosystems, water quality, and the biodiversity that exists right in our own backyard. The presence (or absence) of certain macroinvertebrates and fish serves as important indicators of the environmental health of the billabongs.
