All better now
by Neal Shusterman
The world is in the grip of a pandemic, where “recoverees” (those who survive the virus) are forever altered – Crown Royale makes them happy! Recoverees feel the need to help anyone in need of aid, and they want to spread their happiness to the “unembraced” (those who haven’t caught the virus yet).
Some people are desperate to catch Crown Royale, like teenagers Mariel, who is homeless, and Ròn, who suffers from mental health issues. Others are afraid to catch the virus, and like 19-year-old Morgan, who has recently taken control of a company that is working on a vaccine.
After contracting the virus, Ròn discovers that he is a ‘superspreader’ and realises that it is his purpose in life to spread Crown Royale to everyone on the planet, regardless of the consequences. Meanwhile, Mariel discovers that she is immune, and this puts her on a collision course with Morgan, who will stop at nothing to see the virus eradicated, even if it means kidnap and murder…
All Better Now is a fascinating tale that explores the benefits of universal happiness and the effects it could have on the world as we know it. This is a story told from many different and interesting points of view, with a thrilling ending that leaves the door open for a sequel…
