Malvern Emergency Food Program

Malvern Emergency Food Program

The Malvern Emergency Food Program (MEFP) aims to provide a 24-hour emergency food service for Stonnington residents in need.

Food parcels provide a practical way to help families facing a temporary crisis as they provide a two to three day supply of nutritionally balanced non-perishable food.

In 2023 our parcels are distributed primarily through the Malvern and Prahran Police Stations, Prahran Community Learning Centre, MOIRA Youth Services and other local charities.

The Malvern Emergency Food Program (MEFP) has been operating in the Stonnington area for about 30 years. It was an initiative of Snr Sgt Garry Proudlock, then at Malvern Police Station and now retired, who recognised a need in the community. So MEFP was formed to provide non-perishable food parcels to those caught in difficult circumstances and in need of urgent food. Our bags of food are distributed from the Malvern and Prahran Police Stations and this year there has been increased demand. The Police Stations usually operate around the clock, so our bags can be accessed at any time of the day. The police have told us that the circumstances where our bags have been needed are wide ranging eg the homeless, domestic violence victims, those suffering mental health issues and so on.

We get most of our supplies from donations from schools, but this has been impacted by the Covid period. Now we are having to make regular purchases to replenish our stocks as we wait for the donations from schools to build back to pre-Covid levels. The increased demand is also adding to the pressure.

MEFP operates solely through a small group of volunteers with the valued support of the Malvern and Prahran police.

We are always grateful for any support from schools or the community
