Ms Christine Larsen - Curriculum Leader The Arts

It has been a busy week in the Arts with a number of events Drama, Visual Art and Film, Television and New Media students in our Graduate Arts Exhibition and Awards night. The night included an Art exhibition of work from our Year 11 and 12 Visual Art and Visual Arts in Practice students, film screenings by our Year 12 Film, Television and New Media students and snippets of Drama performances by Year 12 Drama and Drama in Practice students.  Thank you to our Senior Arts teachers,  Mr Pierce Hardy, Ms Rebecca Taylor, Ms Julia Wilken and Ms Jasmine Wilton for their hard work and dedication in guiding our senior students through their assessment tasks and congratulations to all of our Senior Arts students for a truly inspiring display of talent. Music students were recognised at the end of last term at the annual Soiree but I would also like to acknowledge the input from Ms Megan Harmston and Dr Andrew Butt in preparing the Year 12 Music students for their assessment throughout the year.

The Creative Generation Excellence in Visual Art Awards

Each year, the 'Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Visual Art' recognises and celebrates the artistic achievements of senior high school students from across Queensland. We have just received notification that our two entries this year, (both Year 12 students) have received awards. Elijah Smith has received a commendation award for his artwork, “Unburdened Mind”. Gabriel Dineen has received an Excellence award for his artwork entitled, “Resistance” and his work will be part of the 2024 central exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art next year from April. Congratulations to Gabe and Elijah for being selected from over 400 entries for this prestigious award.

Year 11 Visual Art Excursion

Also this week our Year 11 Visual Art students participated in a full-day excursion to various points of interest along the Bramble Bay coastline and tributaries of the Brisbane River including Shorncliffe foreshore, Boondall Wetlands, the Billai Dhagun Walking Track to view the Nurri Millen Indigenous Totems, Nudgee Cemetery, Pinkenba, Northshore Riverside Park, the Gallery of Modern Art and Fish Lane in South Brisbane. Students will choose an aspect of the journey to form a focus for their artmaking in the first and second internal assessments.

Artwork of the Month

We congratulate the Artwork of the Month winner for October, Alastair Williams for his outstanding lino print as part of the Year 8 Visual Art unit, “Nature Translations”.
