Student Voice: Listening to what matters most!!

Student voice acknowledges that students have unique perspectives on learning, teaching, and schooling, and should have the opportunity to actively shape their own education.

Student voice involves students actively participating in their schools, communities and the education system, contributing to decision making processes and collectively influencing outcomes by putting forward their views, concerns and ideas.

At Resurrection School we are always looking for ways to include and value student voice. Students have opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions through:

  • Student Action Teams
  • Student Representative Council
  • Children's Advisory Group
  • Children's Forum
  • Curriculum planning
  • Student Clubs

This year, two Year 6 students were choosen through an application process to participate in the Children's Advisory Group through Dandenong Council.  The Children’s Advisory Group brings together students from the local primary schools within Greater Dandenong as representatives of their wider school community, to talk about the local community, facilities, and activities in Greater Dandenong, and to support Council in its commitment to be a child friendly city.

The children's forum day was a really fun time to show how big of a change that such a small child can think of. It had fun activities showing us what changes we can make in the neighborhood we live in. We had so many opportunities to share your ideas and opinions in ways that children find fun to experience. We got to make suggestions for new books in our libary and even changes they can make in the near future.

Early this year, I was elected to be the student advisory council member of the City of Greater Dandenong representing our school. As a student advisory council member, I get to participate in the student advisory council meeting which usually takes place twice a term. During the meeting, the student advisory council members from different primary schools within the City of Greater Dandenong will gather together to discuss different issues and we share our opinion and feedback to the Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong and other council officers. Last Wednesday, there was a special children's forum where I had the privilege to invite a friend to come along with me. The highlight of the event for me was the great sport training session by South East Leisure. I really enjoy being the student advisory council member as I got the opportunity to meet our Mayor face to face, to take a photo together with the Mayor and the Council Youth Services and to have the privilege to voice out my opinions to our council members. It is indeed a valuable experience and I am honored to be part of this.

The Children's forum day was a day when everyone got together to have fun, and celebrate young people in greater Dandenong and their voices that matter. We talked about cleaning our environment, transitions into high school and young voices. Towards the end, a year twelve student came to talk to us about her experience with public speaking! She also got an award for representing young voices. Everyone there was extremely supportive and we all made lots of new friends! Getting to attend the children's forum day with all of these new friends and people I had met throughout this year at our meetings was an amazing experience, and I hope that others who get to attend the children's advisory group will have just as much fun as us!

On the 25 of October I was invited by my friend Nathan  to go to the Children’s Forum.
The day was really fun as we had 3 workshops and had so much fun. My favorite workshop was when we got to suggest ideas to the library in Springvale and Dandenong and I came up with many cool ideas. I also enjoyed it when I got to play soccer. The other workshops were also very fun. I enjoyed the lunch and the rest of the day where we got to listen to all the other people's ideas. But my favorite part was the goodie bags. I really enjoyed the forum and recommend anyone to go there next year.
