Pictures of Practice
The best teachers and indeed the best people are lifelong learners. We pride ourselves at Kambala in building a culture of learning and professional dialogue. On the Monday 9 October Professional Development Day we were delighted to highlight the efforts of staff across the school in sessions entitled Pictures of Practice. Organised by our Director of KITE Samantha Gooch. Teachers across the school Prep to Year 12 gathered to share insights in the pedagogical domain.
From the Junior School we were delighted to hear from the following team members on their professional learning and insights.
Sheridan Sweeney on her research with the International Coalition of Girls’ Global Action Research Collaborative on developing global thinkers.
Kate Moore shared her Reflections from Academic Enhancement Planning linked to the ACER Wellbeing Survey
Anna Derrig on the effective use of Questioning and Reflection and her experiences at Harvard Project Zero Classroom
Michelle Pearce-Denovan on Slow Looking with See, Think, Wonder again linked to her experiences with Harvard’s Project Zero Classroom
Senior School Teachers also shared their insights into areas such as:
Generative Topics and Throughlines
Creating a student to teacher feedback loop
Unveiling Stories: Promoting critical thinking and real world connectedness
Speed Dating with Books to promote engagement
We endeavour to create a culture of thinking at Kambala where all teachers are lifelong learners at Kambala. My heartfelt thanks goes to these educators for so generously sharing their Pictures of Practice.
Ingrid Holden Cup
The Ingrid Holden Cup is a proud Kambala tradition established many years ago
in honour of Mrs Ingrid Holden, who served as Deputy Head of Junior School for close to two decades.
This year we will be holding our Ingrid Holden Cup public speaking finals in Term 4. Our Years 3-6 students have been developing their persuasive writing skills in class by writing both prepared and impromptu speeches on a variety of topics. Their public speaking skills have been enhanced by considering posture, eye contact, gestures and the 5Ps for voice: projection, pace, pausing, pitch and pronunciation.
The girls have been assessed on their Manner, Matter and Method when presenting two prepared and one impromptu speech to their class. Two finalists from each class will be selected to speak at the final on the following dates:
Stage 2: Monday 30 October, 2023
Stage 3: Thursday 2 November, 2023
Parents of the finalists will receive an invitation to attend the Final. We are very proud of all of our girls for their impressive speeches.
Tivoli Gates
The school will pilot the closure of Tivoli Gates during the school day.
The gates will close from 9am to 2pm each day. This will commence from Friday 20 October 2023. Thus parent access will be via the lift in the carpark or via the pedestrian gate on New South Head Road.
This is also a pertinent time to ask parents to carefully consider the need for middle-of-the-school-day drop offs for any forgotten belongings.
A reminder that all visitors should sign in at Massie, Watt or Senior School Receptions.

Thursday Lunchtime Sport - Years 5 and 6
Our lunch time sport is happening again this term and will run from Weeks 2 - 5. This term the sport will be a 5-a-side soccer competition.
Students are to meet Mr Paz at the big pine tree with their food at the start of lunch. They will have lunch first on the oval and games will begin after that.
