Week 7/8 Updates

se haPerforming Arts

These last two weeks, students have been wrapping up their projects.

Prep students have been exploring a new way to bring stories to life—using puppets! Working in groups, they got characters from a fairy tale, decorated their puppets, and used them to act out the story. Puppetry has been a big hit, sparking creativity and teamwork among the students.

Grades 1-6 students have finished writing their scripts and have been busy practicing their scenes. They have been using their understanding of characters to change how they speak and move, helping them bring their roles to life. They’ve also worked out where to perform in the room and what props they’ll need. It’s been a wonderful challenge for students to collaborate in small groups, share ideas, and make final decisions for their projects.

I'm looking forward to seeing the students perform for each other next week!

Physical Education

Our Grade Prep to 2 swimming program has now wrapped up, and what a fantastic two weeks it has been! Some students have learned important new water safety skills, while others have continued to build on their already impressive swimming abilities.

Looking ahead, our Year 3–4 students will begin their swimming program in November, and our Year 5–6 students can look forward to an exciting Surf Lifesaving Day at Altona Beach in December.

Getting Ready for Our Celebration !

Since Week 6, all year levels have been working with great excitement to prepare for our Spanish Fiesta and to learn more about Chile: its flag, fun facts about the country, traditions, typical foods, and animals such as the alpaca and the llama.

Students have been busy creating and exploring in many different ways:

  • We learned about and decorated llamas.
  • We made beautiful Chilean flowers inspired by the Copihue tree, Chile’s national flower.
  • We designed colorful murals and long paper chains using the Chilean flag colors.
  • We decorated pañuelos (handkerchiefs) for our dance workshop, where students will soon learn to dance La Cueca, Chile’s national dance.

This has been a wonderful opportunity for students not only to use their creativity but also to gain a deeper understanding of Chilean culture. They have been discovering how traditions, art, and dance connect people and celebrate identity.

We are really looking forward to this special celebration, and we encourage everyone to join in by wearing a traditional outfit from any region of Chile or simply the colours of the Chilean flag: blanco (white), azul (blue), and rojo (red).

Are you ready to celebrate Chile at the Spanish Fiesta and make it an unforgettable day together?

¡¡MUCHAS GRACIAS!!

Visual Arts

What a busy few weeks it has been in the art room!

So many wonderful artworks have been developed and explored. I am very proud of all the students as we come into our last week of term for their hard work, enthusiasm, and dedication in every session.

Preps

Over the last few weeks, students have been transforming glass jars into lanterns by layering colourful tissue paper. Along the way, they practised different techniques and learnt new skills. They also began exploring mosaic tiling, learning where, how, and why it is used before producing their own versions with paper tiles to form shimmering flowers. In addition, the Preps have started painting our “creek” feature, which will run through the art show.

Years 1/2

Students enjoyed constructing bee hive sculptures, using real pasta as part of their designs. This task involved multiple steps and materials, and they all did a fantastic job. They then moved on to naturalist painting, inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers. Using real sunflower images, they focused on line, blending, and brushstrokes to guide their work.

Years 3/4

Over recent weeks, students have been experimenting with symmetry, pattern, and colour to design quirky paper beetles, which will be hiding in the art show. They also worked with foil and clay to model small frog sculptures. Their designs showed great imagination and attention to detail.

Yeas 5/6

Students explored a new art technique that was unfamiliar to most. Each chose an insect to sketch, then traced over their design with glue and string, creating a raised effect that brought their insects to life. They are now covering their string designs with foil to produce striking metallic artworks, stay tuned to see the finished results!
