25th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C
In this week’s readings for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C, present a challenging and thought-provoking message about wealth, stewardship, and our ultimate priorities. The Gospel reading from Luke 16:1-13 tells us the parable of the dishonest manager, a story that, on the surface, seems to praise a morally dubious character. However, Jesus uses this parable to teach a deeper lesson about prudence and using earthly resources for eternal gain.
Gospel Reading: Luke 16:1-13
In this parable, a rich man's manager is accused of squandering his master's property. The master decides to fire him. The manager, facing unemployment, devises a clever plan. He reduces the debts of his master's debtors, earning their goodwill so they'll help him in the future. The master, surprisingly, commends the dishonest manager for his "prudence." Jesus explains that "the children of this world are more prudent in dealing with their own generation than the children of light."
Jesus isn't praising dishonesty. He's highlighting the manager's foresight and decisiveness in a crisis. The manager recognised his precarious situation and acted quickly to secure his future. Jesus challenges us to show a similar level of urgency and wisdom in securing our eternal future. We, too, are stewards of God's gifts our time, talents, and wealth and we must use them to build up the Kingdom of God and prepare for eternity.
The passage also includes a crucial warning: "You cannot serve both God and mammon." Mammon is an Aramaic word for wealth or property. It's a powerful reminder that our hearts cannot be divided. Our ultimate loyalty must be to God alone. We are called to use our material possessions as tools for good, not as ends in themselves.
Discussion Starters
The Dishonest Manager: What's your initial reaction to Jesus' praise of the dishonest manager? How does this parable challenge your understanding of morality and prudence?
Serving God and Mammon: The reading states we cannot serve both God and mammon. How does this conflict manifest in our daily lives? What are some practical ways we can prioritize serving God over accumulating wealth?
Using Our Gifts for Eternity: The parable encourages us to be "prudent" with our earthly possessions for the sake of our eternal future. What are some tangible ways we can use our financial resources or other talents to build the Kingdom of God and help those in need?
Generosity and Detachment: The readings, including the first reading from Amos 8:4-7, speak out against the exploitation of the poor. How does the call to generosity and detachment from wealth connect with our Christian faith and our responsibility to others? What does it mean to be a good steward of God's gifts?

BUILDING HOUSES FOR THE HOMELESS
What a fantastic effort from students and families!!! Mini Vinnies who were adding the homes made to our display, came to me and said “Giuliana we have run out of room and still have 3 boxes full of homes!”
What a great problem to have!!! We had to find more room for our homes. Mini Vinnies will continue to put the remainder of the homes up today. Over 600 homes were made!!! Thank you SFS for your support once again!!
KEEP COSY AND HELP OTHERS KEEP CLEAN – WHAT AN AMAZING EFFORT!!
What a great day it was Monday! I was on morning duty and it was fantastic watching all the students walk into school in their PJs with huge smiles on their faces telling me, “I brought my toiletry donation Giuliana.”
I would like to thank the Mini Vinnies that came up with this idea after being inspired from the Mini Vinnies Conference they attended.
The donations demonstrated another amazing effort from the SFS school community!! Mini Vinnies collected all the toiletry donations and created toiletry packages from the items donated. We have over 40 male toiletry packs and over 40 female toiletry packs. I will now deliver them to the Lynbrook Community Centre.
I would like to thank my Mini Vinnies for another great term!!! I hope they have a restful holiday and come back next term full of energy ready to run our Mini Vinnies Stall at the Twilight Market and then our annual Christmas Appeal.
