Year 6

The last few weeks of Term 3 have been packed with exciting learning and experiences in Year 6.

📚 Reading

We wrapped up our Space Science topic, exploring planets, comets, and the wider solar system. Engagement was high, with students sharing thoughtful questions and sparking some great class discussions.

✍️ Writing

Students completed their explanation texts about Sky Country, explaining how First Nations Peoples use the night sky to share knowledge and track time. Their work showed great research skills and pride in their writing.

➗ Maths

In Maths, we have been working on statistical investigations. Students posed their own questions, collected and organised data, presented it in graphs, and drew conclusions. This hands-on approach made maths fun and meaningful.

💛 Wellbeing

We took part in the Kids Helpline High School Transition Webinar, which helped students reflect on the emotions they might feel about moving to high school and how to stay organised. We also welcomed Year 12 students from Kyneton High School (Kaitlyn, Bridie and Sharni) and their teacher, who shared what to expect at high school, including the clubs, subjects and support available. Our Year 6s left feeling excited and reassured about the transition ahead.

🚌 Excursion to Parliament House and Melbourne Museum

To celebrate our learning, we headed to the city. At Parliament House, students took part in a law-making roleplay in the Lower House, toured the Upper House and saw the incredible historic library. After lunch at Carlton Gardens, we explored the Melbourne Museum, where favourites included the Indigenous art and culture exhibits, the indoor rainforest and the Melbourne history galleries.

Here are some student reflections:

Lawson: “We did a law-making role play in the lower house. Hunter was the Speaker. We made a law about banning video games after 10pm, and it passed to the next house! We also saw a chandelier in the library made of Belgian crystals, one of only three ever made.”

Liv: “We roleplayed a bill to ban video games after 10pm. The affirmative team won! We sat on the 42 stairs out the front, went through security, and saw the green lower house and the red upper house.”

Ella: “I was the Shadow Minister of Youth. After Parliament, I loved exploring the Melbourne Museum’s Indigenous Art room, Melbourne History room, and the indoor rainforest. I especially liked seeing the birds and lizards.”

I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to seeing all students back, ready for their final term of primary school.

There are lots of dates to remember for Term 4 so please check compass for updates.
