Secondary Update

Year 7 Excursion

From Wednesday 5th March to Friday 7th March, our Year 7 students embarked on an exciting camp at Lake Keepit, filled with adventure, teamwork, and new experiences. The camp provided an incredible opportunity for students to challenge themselves, build friendships, and develop new skills in an outdoor setting.

One of the highlights of the camp was the mud run, where students pushed themselves through obstacles, embracing the dirt and teamwork along the way. Kayaking and raft building tested their balance, coordination, and problem-solving skills as they navigated the waters of Lake Keepit. Archery allowed students to refine their focus and precision, with many discovering a hidden talent for hitting the target!

A particularly special moment of the camp was the introduction of wheelchair basketball, a brand-new activity at Lake Keepit. Our school was the first to participate in this unique and engaging sport, giving students a fresh perspective on teamwork and inclusion in sport.

Overall, Year 7 camp was an unforgettable experience, filled with laughter, challenges, and personal growth. Students returned home exhausted but with plenty of great memories and stories to share!

Year 9 Science

In Science this term, Year 9 students have been exploring the human body as part of their unit, "A Coordinated Human". Students have been thinking like scientists to build different models, such as that of the nerve cell: the neuron. They have dissected a sheep's heart, lungs, and liver, which involved separating the organs and comparing their sizes. Students were also able to see and feel how thick the walls of the heart and major arteries are, enabling them to better understand their role in supplying blood to the

entire body. Some were even brave enough to use a straw to inflate the lungs!

Students have also had to work against the clock to keep 'Homer' alive in a practical way that mimicked real-life homeostasis in the body. To do so, they had to maintain Homer's electrolytes and body temperature at stable levels for five minutes by keeping a constant water colour and temperature, respectively. They did this as water ran out the bottom of his body (the cup), so they had the added challenge of ensuring Homer stayed hydrated by not allowing water levels to drop below his eyebrows.

As you can see, this topic has been a lot of fun!

Secondary Assembly - Week 6

During the Week 6 Secondary Assembly, we acknowledged the participation of students at the community celebrations of the 60th Anniversary of the Freedom Rides. This was followed with the recognition of those students who have been demonstrating a commitment to our Term 1 award focus to - START STRONG. As we move forward with Term 1, students are being encouraged to harness the successful start to the year, particularly as we continue to demand more from them. Ways in which they were encouraged to do this by focusing on the following at school:

  • Screen time - correct use of device
  • Food - consideration for nutrition
  • Punctuality - on time for class
  • Bring necessary resources
  • Consideration of seating - and others
  • Are your peers getting “5 good lessons” every day?

Further congratulations to Tommy Walmsley, qualifying for NSWCCC Swimming, and to Brodie Schutt, qualifying for NSWCCC Rugby League.

Year 8 Science

We are learning to relate the structure and function of living things to their classification, survival, and reproduction so that we can make better agricultural management decisions, as well as informed health choices about our own bodies. Students dissected a flower to look at the structures and functions of parts of plants.
