INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY

On International Women’s Day, I wanted to share the incredible story Nobel Prize winning neurobiologist Rita Levi – Montalcini. Rita was an Italian – Jew, living in Italy during the time where anti-Semitic laws limited her career options.  She was an incredible Scientist, who at the age of 20, went against her father’s wishes to attend University, as his opinion was that women should take on what he believed to be traditional roles.  During WW2, she decided to stay in Italy rather than flee. She set up a makeshift lab in her bedroom, continuing her research into the mechanism of cell growth – she did this by using chicken embryos.  After the war, Rita moved to the US where she continued her career in research.

She discovered nerve growth factor – which is a protein that regulates the growth of cells. This finding gives the medical profession a better understanding of tumour growth and our understanding of cells and the human nervous system. It is because of her findings that Rita was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Rita Levi-Montalcini, is an inspiring example of perseverance and dedication in both science and education. Her ground-breaking discovery of nerve growth factor revolutionised our understanding of the nervous system, and I purposefully chose to share her story this morning, because despite facing many obstacles as a woman in a male-dominated field, she remained committed to her work. Her story will hopefully resonate with teachers and support staff in schools, especially when working with young women. Like Rita, we play a vital role in fostering curiosity, self-confidence, and resilience in young women.  We encourage them to pursue careers in fields where they are historically underrepresented. Just as she used her discoveries to impact science, medicine and education, our staff empower students to break barriers, challenge stereotypes, and realise their full potential.  We are inspiring the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators.

On behalf of the Principal Team, we want to celebrate not only your achievements, but the achievements of all the women around the world.  Continue to inspire, empower and create positive change.
